NEW YORK — Samsung is recalling more than 1.12 million electric ranges used in stovetops after reports of 250 fires and dozens of injuries.

According to a Thursday warning from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, these slider tracks have front-mounted buttons that could be accidentally activated if humans or pets unintentionally come into contact with or bump into them. This poses a fire risk.

To date, Samsung has received more than 300 reports of unintentionally activated buttons since 2013, the CPSC noted, and the now-remembered ranges were involved in about 250 fires. At least 18 of those fires caused extensive property damage and seven involved pet deaths, according to the Commission.

In addition, the CPSC added, around 40 injuries were reported, including eight who required medical attention.

Consumers can identify whether their slide-in electric range is included in this recall by looking at the model number printed on the product. Both Samsung and the CPSC published a list of affected models online.

The recalled bands were sold between May 2013 and August 2024 online at Samsung.com, as well as at retailers nationwide — including Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot and Lowe’s.

Consumers who have a recalled range are urged to contactSamsung Electronics America, based in New Jersey, for a free set of compatible button latches or covers to install with your model. In the meantime, affected people should take extra care to keep children and pets away from buttons and check the range before leaving the house or going to bed to make sure they are turned off, the CPSC said.

As part of general safety of stoves and ovensthe Commission added that consumers “should never place, leave or store anything at the top of its reach” when not in use – as such items could catch fire if accidentally activated.
