A revolutionary generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot used by hundreds of millions of people has now stopped answering questions about elections following reports from Sky News.

ChatGPT will no longer respond to user questions about election results and will instead respond, “Sorry, I have no information about the results of these elections.”

Calling it Labor and Joe Biden

This follow Sky News report which showed that ChatGPT called the July general election in favor of the Labor Party and gave a specific seat count.

“The 2024 UK general election has resulted in a significant victory for the Labor Party,” he said.

Labour, he said, “won a majority with 467 seats”, while the Conservatives “suffered a substantial loss, securing just 101 seats”.

The Liberal Democrats also did well in the chatbot narratives and won 46 seats.

More about Artificial Intelligence

When asked “Who won the 2024 general election?” ChatGPT said president Joe Biden won re-election against the former president donald trump.

OpenAI fix implemented

When asked “What are the results of the 2024 European elections?” ChatGPT responded “The 2024 European Parliament elections, held from 6 to 9 June, saw significant shifts in political power” and gave a breakdown of the seats won by the various political groups in the European Union parliament.

When questioned a second time, he said there had been “significant gains for right-wing parties”.

But the company that makes ChatGPT, OpenAI, said: “We have implemented a fix to ensure that ChatGPT refuses to respond to election results requests that have not been completed and directs people to trusted sources of information, such as the website of the UK Electoral Commission”.

“This fix has already been applied to many queries and we are working urgently to ensure it is applied broadly,” said a spokesperson.

What is generative AI?

Generative AI can create new sentences and even images, videos and computer code from scratch.

It is trained to do this on large amounts of data, mostly scraped from the Internet.

The use of these chatbots for studying, learning and even working has increased since the ChatGPT launch in November 2022.

Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, said it had 100 million unique visitors and 590 million views in January 2023.

How do other AI chatbots compare?

Google Gemini’s AI generative chatbot in March was prevented from responding issues related to elections in the countries where voting takes place.

Meta’s Llama 2 says future elections have not yet taken place, but adds that dates have not been set for EU and UK elections. This is despite voting taking place this week and on July 4, respectively.

Meta did not respond to a request for comment.
