Sandwich maker Greencore, a major UK supermarket supplier, has recalled some products due to an E.coli risk, the Food Standards Agency said.

It is a precautionary measure a week after the UK Health Security Agency announced an outbreak forced some people to go to the hospital.

Products from Boots, Asda, Co-op, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Amazon may be contaminated, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said.

It is understood that other manufacturers will issue their own recalls in the coming hours.

The FSA said it had narrowed the source “to a small number of salad leaf products that were used in sandwiches, wraps, sandwiches and rolls”.

“Symptoms of infections include severe and sometimes bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever,” said Trish Mannes from the UKHSA.

People are being advised to follow NHS.uk guidance if they feel unwell.

“Washing your hands with soap and warm water and using disinfectants to clean surfaces will help prevent any spread of infection,” Mannes said.

Those who may be infected should not prepare food for others and avoid work or school until 48 hours after symptoms disappear.

The agency said cases have nearly doubled in the past week, with 98 more bringing the total to 211.

England had 147, Scotland 35, Wales 27, with two in Northern Ireland.

The UKHSA expects numbers to rise as testing is underway for the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) outbreak.

Last week, the agency said the cases were linked to a “nationally distributed food” — but did not provide further details.

Based on 160 cases, 42% of people required hospital treatment, the UKHSA added.

An Asda spokesperson said the recall was a precaution and that shoppers could return products for a refund without a receipt.

The FSA said it was working with other agencies to identify the cause of the outbreak.

E.coli is a diverse group of bacteria that are normally harmless and live in the intestines of humans and animals.

However, some strains, like STEC, can make people very sick.
