TThis year, TIME released its inaugural list of America’s Best Midsize Companies, in partnership with Statist, a leading international provider of market and consumer data and ratings. The result: 500 high-performing midsize companies that are paving the way for American business. See how the winners were selected.

Methodology

The “America’s Best Midsize Companies 2024” research project is a comprehensive analysis conducted to identify the best-performing companies in the United States. The study is based on three main dimensions:

  • Employee satisfaction
  • Revenue growth
  • Sustainability Transparency (ESG)

The first dimension, Employee Satisfaction, was investigated based on data from surveys carried out with a large sample of approximately 170 thousand employees from US companies over the last three years. The assessment covered direct and indirect recommendations from companies, as well as assessments from employers in the dimensions image, environment, working conditions, salary and equality by verified employees.

The second dimension, Revenue Growth, was evaluated using data from the Statista revenue database, which contains company growth data over the last three years. Companies had to meet certain criteria to be considered for the assessment, including generating revenue of at least $100 million but less than $10 billion in 2022 or 2023, depending on whether the most recent data was published during the investigation phase. Additionally, companies had to demonstrate positive revenue growth over the past three years. Both relative and absolute growth were considered in the evaluation.

The third dimension, Sustainability Transparency, was assessed based on ESG data across standardized KPIs from Statista’s ESG database and targeted data searches. To formulate a comprehensive ESG index, several key performance indicators were collected. For the environmental assessment, this included the intensity and rate of reduction of carbon emissions, as well as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) rating. The social dimension assessed the participation of women on boards of directors and the existence of a human rights policy. The governance dimension assessed whether a company had a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report that adhered to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines and a compliance or anti-corruption guideline.

Once the data was collected and evaluated, it was consolidated and weighted within a scoring model. Scores from all three dimensions were summed on an equal percentage basis to form the final classification score of a maximum of 100 points. The 500 highest-scoring companies were awarded America’s Best Midsize Companies for 2024 by TIME and Statista.
