A COUPLE offered a tour of their tiny 20-foot-long home, where they have lived for four years.

Jake and Kiva felt like they were wasting money while living in a rented apartment.

They didn’t have the means to buy a traditional house, but they had enough to build a small house.

“We thought that for about the same amount as the down payment on a real house, we could own a tiny house,” Jake said in a YouTube post. video in the channel Exploring Alternatives.

“Whether this is a stepping stone to something else or we stay in it permanently or something, at least we’re going somewhere that’s meaningful to us.”

The initial budget was CAD$20,000, but in the end they spent $36,000. This equates to just over $26,087.

This price includes everything that was used to build the house and what is inside.

The couple designed and built it from scratch, largely on their own, with help from friends and family, for the bigger jobs, like putting up the walls.

TAKE A LOOK AROUND

At the entrance to the house there is a slim but spacious closet for coats and boots.

In front is a small recycling bin and some storage, plus miniature stairs that allow the cat to easily access the loft.

The front door also opens into the kitchen with dark wood cabinets and intricately designed blue and white tiles.

“I love my kitchen. It’s bigger than any apartment kitchen we’ve ever had,” Kiva said.

They prioritized having plenty of counter space and a large, deep sink.

They made the bench themselves out of plywood and pieces of tongue and groove fir that were stained.

“One of my favorite features of my kitchen is the Mexican tiles we put in,” she added, referring to the backsplash.

“They were one of the first things we bought for the house.

There are several kitchen cabinets, open shelves, toaster and induction cooker.

“It’s been working really well,” she said.

Under the sink there is a central vacuum system with an extremely long hose that can reach all parts of the house.

They just need to pull the hose to vacuum instead of carrying a machine.

The bathroom is divided: the toilet is on one side and the shower on the other.

This creates a hallway that leads to the living room, with a suspended table where they can eat and a large sectional.

An elevated bedroom is accessed by an escalator that slides neatly behind the refrigerator.

Although the loft is larger, there is just enough room to sit while they are up there.

They moved in before it was finished and “became complacent” with its condition, which they said prolonged construction time.

“Our cost of living is much lower,” Kiva said.

“It had a huge impact on our lives. We left our full-time jobs and started a business involving tiny houses and then we both kind of got occasional or seasonal jobs.”

Jake sometimes works as an electrician and Kiva takes care of horses.
