I built a tiny house for just $15,000 – it was like ‘putting Lincoln logs together’ but it’s full of hidden storage

A YOUTUBER has shared how he built a tiny home on wheels for just $15,000 despite having no construction experience.

David Rule spent an entire summer building the structure of his tiny house.

It all started with a 18-foot trailer, which turned into a two-story house that he built solely based on advice and YouTube tutorials.

When it came time to design the interior of the tiny house, he wanted to make it comfortable and functional.

On a YouTube videohe detailed the $15,000 project.

The first thing he did was build an outer box to house the solar components, which are connected to four 180-watt panels on the roof.

He installed vinyl flooring inside which “made it feel cozier.”

David had to insulate the small house so that it would withstand the elements no matter where he drove it.

After finishing that, he built cabinets that served as stairs to the loft bedroom.

He put a rod in the highest closet to hang clothes and there are two drawers inside.

The smaller cabinets had two smaller drawers inside.

David built all the drawers and cabinet doors for the project, which he said was “tedious.”

The small residential community plans to add 25 new units and have healthcare services – but you must meet the criteria to get a spot

He placed cedar boards on the walls and ceiling throughout the house, drilling holes in some areas to install LED lights.

“Assembling the cedar is like playing with Lincoln logs in expert mode,” he joked.

“As more and more cedars went up, this thing started to look more like a real house. It’s crazy how far we’ve come since the days when it was just a rusty trailer.”

Back on the first floor, David drilled a hole in the floor to install the shower and then made a frame to hold the water tank.

He framed the kitchen and built a pull-out shelf to store the refrigerator and freezer under the counter.

The kitchen has a butcher block counter, a built-in propane stove, and a deep sink.

He added a few finishing touches like a cozy rug, overhead lights, and of course, a coffee maker.

“After two summers of working on it, it’s finally complete,” David said.

In total, he spent about $7,000 on the exterior and $8,000 on the interior of the house.

However, he is currently looking for land to buy where he can keep the small house, which will certainly cost him another few thousand dollars.

Eventually, he hopes to turn it into an Airbnb and recoup the money he spent on construction.

ANOTHER OPTION

If you are not as confident as David in your construction skills, you might consider moving to a small residential community.

Paradise Tiny Home Community is located in the Coachella Valley, California.

It’s the region’s first tiny home village, offering pre-built tiny homes for just $795 in monthly rent.

“Carefree, low-maintenance luxury tiny homes in the sun plus the privileges of resort-style living,” says the website.

“Property includes access to resort-style amenities including central pool, clubhouse with fitness center and activity room, outdoor community BBQ area, lounge and more.”

Residents can enjoy hot tubs, a dog park, a golf course and even a pickleball court.

“Our goal is to create a model for small villages across the country,” the website says.

“We’re here to redefine community living by offering a wealth of amenities and a level of luxury never before seen in the Coachella Valley.”

Those looking to buy a home rather than rent should expect to pay between $100,000 and mid-$200,000.
