I built my tiny house for $4,000 – my entryway design allows for more storage, but an accordion door creates extra space

A YOUTUBER offered a tour of the tiny home on wheels he built for around $4,000, and it all started with a broken trailer.

He wanted to challenge himself to build a small house for the same cost as six months of the cheapest rent he could find.

To make it a little more challenging, he wanted to build it in less than a month.

On his YouTube channel (@TwoHandsAndATinyHouse), he shared a video offering a home tour.

He fixed up an old trailer to use as a base for the house.

Solar panels on the roof keep the entire house powered and it could be disconnected from the grid if he wanted.

When designing the house, he had just four requirements: it had to have a bed that couldn’t be folded down for storage, a bathroom, a shower, and “ample kitchen space.”

He was able to get all three inside.

The expansive space comes largely from the way he designed the entry.

It’s extra wide, fits in the wardrobe on one side and hides the bathroom on the other.

He can comfortably open the drawers and rummage through the clothes hanging in the closet without feeling cramped.

On the other side is an accordion door that hides a composting toilet.

I feel like a queen in our tiny DIY house – we had to get creative, but it only cost $40,000 and we have a full rooftop deck

The curve of the door was extremely important for the convenience of using the bathroom.

“I created this double door so I can open the door around me when I’m in the entryway instead of having to walk around it,” he said.

When the door is completely open, it also creates a privacy barrier between the room and the rest of the house.

There’s a single bed in front of the kitchen counter, but he designed the house with enough space for a double bed.

In the future, he hopes to build a platform to fold a double bed into the wall during the day and dismantle it at night.

The kitchen has a panoramic window that lets in lots of natural light and makes the room feel larger.

“When these things [windows] they’re open, it’s so cool to have the outside coming in,” he said.

The shower is at the front of the house, built around the trailer hitch.

The handy builder waterproofed the entire shower and used vinyl flooring to cover the walls.

He opted for outdoor deck flooring, which is also waterproof.

Total construction time was five and a half weeks, in part due to waiting for some parts to be delivered.

He spent $4,900 on construction but said he could have done it for less.

“The bottom line for me is that doing things quickly and cheaply are on opposite ends of the spectrum,” he said.

“If I had more time, I could have sourced a lot more reused and recycled materials and saved a lot of money.

“Similarly, working with these materials takes a lot of time.

“Either way, I think the initial investment is definitely worth the long-term satisfaction you get from these things. They’re a labor of love.”

AN EASIER OPTION

Those who are unable or not interested in building their own house have the option of purchasing a prefabricated house.

Retailers like Amazon and The Home Depot have added the homes to their inventory, making them easier to access.

Amazon is selling a tiny folding house starting at $8,000.

The Zolyndo tiny house is available in four sizes:

  • 13 feet by 20 feet for $7,000
  • 15 feet by 20 feet for $9,100
  • 16.5 feet by 20 feet for $7,200
  • 19 feet by 20 feet for $6,500

The house comes with a bathroom installed and is prepared for electrical wiring.

Depending on the size purchased, the house can have two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living area and a kitchen.

An Amazon buyer who bought a similar foldable house for $26,000 offered a tour and pointed out some drawbacks to the space.

Another hands-on homeowner built a small house for his mother so she could live closer to him, despite having no construction experience.
