A 21-year-old became a homeowner after building himself a tiny home for less than $7,000, despite a surprisingly large expense.
Jack McKenna built his first small house when he was just 13 years old.
When he was making plans for life after college, he decided he would do it again.
He started building in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, and his new home was ready after three years.
McKenna affectionately calls the house Acorn, which measures just 129 square feet, he revealed in a YouTube video. video in the channel Living big in a tiny house.
The foundation is a dual-axle tractor-trailer that only cost $73 but was in poor condition.
With the help of some family members, McKenna was able to transform the trailer into a home with all the necessities and more.
The small house has an elevated area that makes it appear more spacious than it really is.
McKenna designed the house when he was just 16 years old, leaving space for a bedroom, living area, kitchen complete with dining table and even a home office.
The bathroom has a large shower and there is a hatch on the outside of the house that provides easy access to empty the composting toilet.
He has plenty of storage throughout the house, including drawers under his bed and hidden throughout the kitchen.
He used mostly reclaimed materials to keep costs down, spending just $6,800 in total.
“It would have taken half the time if I was using things off the shelf, but I’m really glad I decided to go this route,” he said.
“You have to be patient and look for these pieces.”
There was one item that put a huge dent in McKenna’s budget – the heating system.
He has a wood-burning stove that cost almost half the total cost of building the house.
The small house is on his family’s farm, which saves him the expense of buying land to park it.
He currently lives there alone, but his girlfriend plans to join him soon and has even picked out some decorations and paint colors to make him feel at home.
“It wasn’t that great in our heads, but now that we’ve built it, it’s great,” he joked.
