Since then, heartbroken locals have shared their sadness at the closure.

Shoppers turned to social media.

“Sad inflation It is driving all out,” wrote one in Facebook.

“NO NO NO!! One of our favorite stores!! Why????” asked another.

A third shared: “The staff have always been very Cool. Even though I lived close to Pick ‘n Save, I took advantage of the extra time to go to the pig. I’m sad to see him go.”

PREMATURE CLOSURE

The store was scheduled to close on June 15.

However, the aisles became incredibly sparse before the closure, which Sentinel reported.

All merchandise was marked 50% off.

History of Piggly Wiggly

Piggy Wiggly opened its first store in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee.

It was the first self-service grocery store.

Before Piggy Wiggly’s innovation, supermarkets did not allow customers to pick up their products.

Instead, the customer would hand a list of items to a clerk, who would collect them throughout the store.

As of 2024, Piggly Wiggly has 502 locations in the Southeast and Midwest.

OTHER GROCERY STORE CLOSURES

Piggly Wiggly isn’t the only grocery chain with a store closing soon.

The closure of ShopRite in Ellenville, New York will leave shoppers in a food desert, forcing them to drive further to buy groceries.

Located about 100 miles from New York City, the beloved Hudson Valley grocery store is closing due to an expiring lease.

It’s just one of more than 12 ShopRites slated to close in the area.

The last month to shop will be October.

Meanwhile, Stop & Shop has announced plans for several closures.
