SEVERAL neighbors questioned a couple about the new home they built.

Last year, a North Caroline couple used all-metal beams and steel to build their dream home.

Bernie and Tina Fox confused many people in the community as the house they were building looked more like a new business location than a home, local media outlet The rant reported.

The Foxes are very happy with their hybrid house and barn.

They refer to this as a ‘barndominium’.

Conjunction formed by two words: ‘barn’ and ‘condominium’.

Their unique home was affordable for them to build and even saved energy.

It has an open floor plan and a large workshop that doubles as a garage.

Despite the strange looks and peculiar interest of the neighbors, the couple’s house was exactly what they wanted.

Bernie is a machinist, welder and musician who was not happy when he learned that several Sandford, North Carolina homes that were for sale did not have garages.

Their home’s garage is two stories high, with plenty of work space and a large area for Bernie to play music.

“I loved it,” he told The Rant.

My council house was literally a shell when I moved in – I had a mega DIY bathroom renovation, my tiles cost £6

“It’s my dream house. And most importantly, it was achievable.”

The couple decided to move to the area around the time the global pandemic hit.

A big part of what attracted them to the “barndominium” was its affordability or affordability, as Bernie explained.

Blended homes, like the North Carolina couple’s, are starting to pop up in several Southern states for the same reason the Foxes love theirs.

Barndominiums are usually metal or steel framed structures.

They are made to look like a traditional barn from the outside and often do, which can confuse people who have never seen houses like them before.

Despite their barn-like exterior appearance, barndominiums traditionally feature a finished living area inside.

Most homes made from barndominium also have open floor plans.

They, like any type of house or residence, vary in size.

Bernie and Tina’s house has about 1,500 square feet of living space inside and about the same size for a garage and work space.

Many homeowners who prefer barndominiums also appreciate their high ceilings and other modern amenities.
