Happen Movies (@happenfilms) is a YouTube channel that shares videos about tiny homes and natural living.

On a videoa couple discussed how they built their dream tiny house in three months.

Using mostly recycled materials, Liam and Rachel’s resourcefulness allowed them to build the 67-square-foot home for just $420.

“We ended up getting pretty much everything we needed to build the entire house for free,” Liam said.

The couple scavenged through rubbish bins from demolition sites and Gumtree website to build a budget.

They used salvaged paper insulation to line the entire house and ran out, but ended up finding a new tarp in the trash.

The couple only needed to buy six items, including cement, steel tape, screws, wood glue, chains and hinges.

Liam explained how they were looking for food in the bin at the local supermarket and ended up finding a tarpaulin still in its packaging, which they used to cover the roof.

He added that he believes that traditional construction methods are not sustainable, but that the use of recycled materials and the construction of small spaces can be sustained for longer in the future.

As most of the items used in the house were recycled or reused, the couple only needed to purchase six items for the construction.

They bought cement, steel tape, screws, wood glue, chains and hinges.

LITTLE TREASURE

Liam and Rachel had minimal previous construction experience, so the couple had to learn as they went along.

They decided to build the house using only hand tools and were able to do so for most of the construction, but ended up needing to use a drill and impact driver.

“I think we wanted to challenge the idea that you need a lot of high-tech tools, skills and knowledge to build a house,” Liam said, adding that most of the tiny house was built with a hand saw. and hammer.

The interior of the little house had a small living area downstairs and a loft with a double bed upstairs.

Liam and Rachel did not need to include a shower, bathroom or kitchen in the space because of the communal spaces and facilities available on the property.

“For us, this house is just a place to spend quiet time, a place to sleep, to store our personal belongings,” Liam said.

Their home is on a family property, as the family has allowed several people to stay on the land rent-free in exchange for developing the property.

Together with the other residents, Liam and Rachel must build infrastructure, plant vegetable gardens and maintain the land.
