A small village on the California coast will be open to individuals and couples currently facing homelessness.
The La Posada Project will have 80 units with rent-free private rooms in the municipality of Santa Bárbara.
Residents can rest easy knowing there is 24/7 security, three meals a day and intensive case management for every resident.
There will also be mental and physical health services and transportation.
Each couple or individual will have their own room and can bring their pets.
“We operate based on what I call the four P’s,” said Jack Lorenz of Dignity Moves, the organization that partnered with the county to build the village.
“We offer everyone a private room with a locked door. They can bring their belongings, they can bring their pets, and in exchange for giving them all these amenities, people have to agree to work with an intensive case manager to come work out an exit plan that gets them into housing. stable within 6 to 12 months”
The community aims to bridge the gap between the outdoors and housing stability to help residents find permanent shelter, he told the local news outlet. KCLU.
“We are in a position where if we continue at the rate we are doing now, we will get to what we call functional zero for unsheltered homelessness in the county,” Lorenz said.
“This is – in addition to being a humanitarian issue – a public health and safety issue.”
CHANGE
The tiny homes are described as “state-of-the-art modular units” made from durable recycled materials.
Only those experiencing long-term homelessness in southern Santa Barbara County, including eastern Goleta Valley, will be eligible for housing.
A referral process through Continuum of Care must be completed to be considered for change.
The forecast is that an average of 180 people will stay in the area, according to Dignity Moves website.
HOME SWEET HOME
There are several similar small residential communities throughout California.
The Mission Cabins in San Francisco consist of 60 homes for homeless residents. Up to 68 people can be accommodated on site.
Each house has a single or double bed, storage, furniture, lockable door and heating.
There are common areas where residents can socialize and relax, including a place for everyone to eat the two meals served daily.
Additionally, they can bring their pets and invite guests.
However, a strict 48-hour rule prohibits residents from going out for more than two days at a time.
If they do, their home will be donated to someone else in need.
Another tiny house offers lifetime residency for a one-time payment of $3,000.
