CONFUSION over Costco’s strict membership rules has stressed families who use the same card.

A customer has scolded the big-box retailer for having a complicated policy that is causing shopping chaos.

The man accused the network on social media of having crazy rules.

“Dear Costco, some families have more than 2 shoppers. Your politics suck,” he wrote on X/Twitter.

“I was only stopped at the checkout because I’m using my wife’s card.

“And they basically said we need to have another association because three of us contribute to household chores.

However, Costco firmly states through its online membership information page that the cards are non-transferable.

However, there are several ways to share with family and friends.

Anyone with a card can take up to two guests to a Costco warehouse during each visit, he said.

Plus, if you’re the primary member, you can assign your free household card to someone else in your household.

That person will receive their own membership card and will also be able to shop at Costco independently.

Costco also stipulates that shoppers must present their membership card when entering any warehouse – and at checkout.

It is the largest wholesale club in the US and surpasses rivals Sam’s Club and BJ’s.

And all three retailers charge roughly the same amount for basic subscriptions.

However, Costco has come under fire on social media after cracking down on violators in recent years.

This has caused buyers to become fed up with constant member ID checks in particular.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow, and the retailer has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

“I always wondered why they make you show your card. You need to use it to pay for anything, right?” asked a confused person in a Reddit thread.

“Okay, I understand that Costco needs to check membership cards at the entrance. But why is there another store employee just before self-checkout checking the membership card?

PROBLEMS WITH CARD

One Redditor — who claimed to be a Costco employee — begged shoppers to “just show their card, please.”

“Yes, we really need to see your membership card (or app) when you enter the warehouse. No, we are not doing this to upset you,” they wrote.

“Yes, it is indeed in your membership contract that you must prove your membership when entering the warehouse. Yes, we asked the people who came before you to prove their membership.”

REPRESSION

The exclusive wholesale retailer recently launched a crackdown on membership sharing.

“We don’t think it’s right that non-members receive the same benefits and prices as our members,” former chief financial officer Richard Galanti said in a company statement last year.

Its stores had already stationed staff at entrances to check membership cards.

But now, shoppers are also asked to show their ID cards.

This, in turn, has led to complaints from some about feeling like potential criminals.

“It’s a little disheartening to be shopping and have an employee randomly ask for your card and ID to verify membership,” wrote Facebook user JB Montgomery in the comments of one publish.

“I even have one of the photo cards and they still wanted to see my ID to compare. It made me feel like some kind of criminal.”
