KROGER has come under fire from a frustrated customer after some self-checkout issues.

The supposedly negative visit to the store made them threaten to boycott the retailer at certain times.

“Well, I won’t be going to Kroger in the morning anymore,” the shopper, Charles, wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Charles continued to claim that Kroger employees near the self-checkout area were not helping customers with their purchases.

“Everyone wants to hang around and talk,” he fumed.

“5 employees talking loudly and not giving a shit about the records.”

The customer also noted that their local Kroger only had self-checkouts and had apparently removed checkout lines entirely.

He argued that checkout lines be brought back for good and self-checkout removed.

Then, Kroger staff would again help customers through the checkout process, according to the shopper.

“Self-checkout only. Close self-checkouts,” Charles noted.

“And put people back to work.”

Charles’ maddening experience was immediately noticed by Kroger.

I worked at Kroger – that breeze you feel when you walk into the store isn’t just air pressure, it’s a deliberate tactic

The company apologized and asked him to contact the official X account privately with more details.

“Hi Charles! We apologize for any frustration with store conditions and would be happy to share your concerns with the store leadership teams. Please send us a private message with the store location as well as any additional feedback you would like to provide. ” Kroger wrote.

He’s also not the first customer to request Kroger’s self-checkout improvements recently.

CHAOS KIOSK

Some echoed Charles’ complaint that there should always be boxes available for shoppers.

“Can we please get some human checkout service in San Diego?” one Kroger fan wrote in an X post.

“6:30 am at the Hazard Center location. There are no checkers available to help me.”

The buyer claimed that he had a “cart full of purchases” at the self-service kiosk and classified the situation as “unacceptable”.

Another frustrated fan claimed the brand was “punishing” paying shoppers at the kiosks in multiple ways earlier this month.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and they were offered more cashiers.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

Many of their allegations were about employees allegedly hovering around and monitoring the scanning of items too closely, preventing a “peaceful” checkout experience.

Others stated that Kroger’s automated self-checkout voice feature was too loud, with no way to silence it when bagging merchandise and leaving the store.
