The longtime chain has closed its South Star location in South Austin.

That means the restaurant has one last location in North Star.

Trudy’s has faced financial problems in the past as it had filed for bankruptcy a few years ago, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

The chain emerged from bankruptcy when it was purchased by a North Carolina-based venture capital firm in 2020 for $6.5 million.

Trudy’s had three locations at the time of this sale.

The restaurant’s CEO, Scott Taylor, who has been in this role for a month, said it’s not all bad news for the company as there may be new plans for the future.

Taylor said Trudy’s was looking to expand and open two new restaurants in Austin and even expand to Houston and San Antonio.

The CEO explained some of the reasons for the recent closure, according to the ABC affiliate KVUE.

“We looked at several options to keep this location open, but the economics and changes to the immediate commercial area unfortunately don’t work out,” Taylor said.

“We want to thank all of our loyal fans in South Austin for making Trudy’s a part of their lives over the years, and we invite you to visit our North Star restaurant whenever you can.”

Trudys North Star branch operations director Chris Armstrong also had a positive outlook for the company.

“The future is bright for Trudy’s as we return to our beloved roots and bring our authentic Tex-Mex to fans new and old,” said Armstrong.

Armstrong also shared some exciting menu updates for customers.

“I know our guests will be thrilled that we’re bringing back some of their longtime favorite menu items and specials, and I’m personally excited that our leadership team is ready to bring Trudy’s to even more communities across the Lone Star State.”

Restaurant Closings in 2024

BOSSes of major restaurant chains have announced a series of restaurant closures. The US Sun compiled a list of those affected by the network.

  • Biscuit Barrel: Stores in Medford, Oregon, Columbia, South Carolina and Sacramento, California, closed.
  • Mod Pizza: Bosses drastically closed 27 stores, including in the state of California.
  • Frisch’s Big Boy: Restaurant bosses have confirmed the closure of a restaurant in Covington, Kentucky.
  • Two dolars: Four restaurants in Ohio are set to close.
  • Pepper: A restaurant in Port Arthur, Texas, has closed permanently.
  • Friendly: Bosses have confirmed that an establishment in Ronkonkoma, Long Island, will close.
  • Pizza Hut: A restaurant in Glen Falls, New York, closed at the end of March.
  • Danny: Two restaurants in Boise and Nampa, Idaho, have closed.
  • Carl’s Jr.: The first location in Boise, Idaho, has closed.

Trudy’s wasn’t the only small chain restaurant to recently close a location, The US Sun previously reported.

The owner of Strip’s Chicken explained why he closed his Kansas City, Missouri location.

Todd Johnson blamed crime for his decision to close one location but continue operating his other two locations.

“I’ve had eight break-ins in two years, and the only reason we haven’t had one since last summer is because we stopped taking money,” he said.

US Sun has reached out to Trudy’s for comment.
