A COSTCO customer successfully returned an old, smelly carpet that left a bad smell in his home.
Even though the rug was three years old, Costco customer service didn’t bat an eye at the return.
Costco’s lenient return policy means members can return just about anything.
One shopper took advantage of the lax policy and shared the story of his successful return on the r/Costco subreddit.
The user explained how he bought a living room rug three years ago, during a product demonstration “show” in the store.
About two years after owning the rug, it started to smell.

The customer “tried everything” to get rid of the smell until he read online that the rubber lining was the cause as it was likely deteriorating.
“At first only I could smell it, then my friends started commenting on the strange smell in my house,” they wrote.
The buyer said he asked Costco before bringing the rug back and received support.
“When I put it on a cart, one of the people returning wrinkled her nose and said, ‘What’s that horrible smell?’
“That probably sealed the return for me. And yes, I had the receipt.”

One Redditor shared how the woman returned three pieces of jewelry worth $11,000 to the warehouse.
“In the last three years, she spent $54,000 total and returned $44,000,” they shared.
After the buyer was refunded, she was prohibited from returning jewelry.
Another Costco shopper got similarly expensive returns, carrying three carts full of furniture to customer service.
The return consisted of several sofas, a rug and items in bags.

The buyer purchased the furniture to use while on vacation and brought it back because he “didn’t need anything after the vacation.”
Other customers were horrified that the customer was abusing Costco’s return policy and using the retailer as a “rental service.”
