TARGET customers were furious with the self-checkout closures seen at select stores.

The retail giant has taken several steps over the past year to adjust and improve its self-checkout operations.

Not all of Target’s decisions please fans, including opening and closing kiosks during specific business hours.

For months, some stores reportedly left their self-checkout areas closed for part of the morning or part of the evening before closing time.

Others block sections during the middle of the day – opening self-checkouts later and closing them earlier.

This action was apparently confirmed by some employees, who noted that although opening hours at Target stores are 8am to 10pm, self-checkout only remained open from 10am to 6:30pm.

It’s not yet clear whether the kiosk closures will become a nationwide measure or remain selective, as some shoppers say they don’t see similar action being taken at their local Target.

The brand noted in February that only a few locations were undergoing self-checkout testing, so The street.

A spokesperson told the outlet that the tests were being done to “determine its impact on the overall guest experience.”

Some fans now claim that guest experience has dropped considerably due to the brand’s testing.

They argue that the closures create long lines and wait times and that Target doesn’t open enough cash registers to accommodate the influx of customers who would use self-checkouts if they weren’t locked down.

IT IS ALREADY ENOUGH

“Today at @Target we will have none of the 17 self-checkout lanes open and only five of the manned lanes open, causing checkout times of 30 minutes,” someone fumed in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“This is great customer service.”

“Seriously, @Target @TargetNews, keep the self-checkout open until closing time OR SCHEDULE MORE THAN ONE CASHIST!” another echoed.

“Ridiculous and completely unfair to your frontline employees. 20 people (at least) with full carts queuing for ONE checkout.”

A frustrated customer claimed that their local Target had a single self-checkout kiosk open during a trip, leading to lines almost out the door.

“Target with just 1 record is crazy,” they fumed.

“Their self-checkout line was the length of the store.”

They said it took them 30 minutes to come out with their items.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

ONGOING ISSUE

As The US Sun previously reported, others claimed they waited “forever” due to the self-checkout closure.

Self-checkout continues to be a controversial topic at Target with kiosk closures and a 10-item limit policy made permanent in March.

Heightened security measures, including some select stores with ID checks and age limit restrictions, have also made some fans nervous.
