A WALMART customer was fed up with the retailer and its changes to self-checkout.

She threatened to shop elsewhere due to feelings that Walmart was forcing customers to purchase her membership.

Walmart has faced many difficulties with self-checkout, leaving the retailer to take steps that customers disagree with.

The self-checkout theft led the retailer to impose receipt checks, lock items and limit which customers could use the kiosks.

Some customers were especially frustrated with the retailer’s latest move, which involved reserving self-checkout slots for Spark delivery drivers or Walmart+ subscribers.

Buyers started to notice the change in February.

A Walmart customer expressed her frustration on social media.

“So now Walmart wants to shut down self-checkout to try to get you to buy the subscription? Honestly. I’m done with Walmart. F*** yall,” she wrote on X.

“I’M GOING TO DRIVE THE EXTRA THREE MINUTES TO ANOTHER SUPERMARKET. BYE.”

Along with other shoppers, User X interpreted the self-checkout restrictions as an attempt by Walmart to force customers to purchase a $98 annual Walmart+ subscription.

“I wouldn’t pay for self-pay,” said another customer.

“Anyone crazy enough to pay for self-checkout needs to be in a mental institute. Sorry.”

Walmart spokesman Joe Pennington told The US Sun that the change was not intended to increase Walmart+ subscriptions, but to limit customers’ use of self-checkout.

Regardless, Walmart customers were not happy with the lane restrictions, which ended up causing long lines.

“It’s kind of annoying when you’re trying to get a snack on break and there are a bunch of people and only four ATMs available,” shared one customer.

BIG CHANGES

Some Walmart stores have taken their self-checkout changes a step further and removed kiosks altogether.

That was the case at a Walmart in St. Louis, Missouri, which abandoned its machines on April 14.

“The decision was based on several factors, including feedback from associates and customers, purchasing patterns and business needs in this area,” said Brian Little, global director of communications for Walmart Corporate Affairs.

“We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the opportunity to provide more personalized and efficient service.”

Around the same time, Walmarts in Greensville, South Carolina, and Cleveland, Ohio, switched to cashiers.

In related news, Walmart’s CEO confirmed that the retailer is “lowering prices” – and has already offered 7,000 rollbacks on popular products.

Additionally, Walmart’s CPO spoke about “changes” in the business and the “best path forward” as it cuts hundreds of jobs and closes stores.
