Wendy’s is facing a lettuce shortage, the fast food company has admitted.

A notice published on Wendy’s website and the app says: “Some restaurants are currently experiencing lettuce shortages due to heavy rains in the producing region.

“We appreciate your understanding as our goal is to provide a fresh solution for all of our customers.”

Like most lettuce in the U.S., Wendy’s sources its lettuce from fields in California and Arizona.

Both states experienced heavy rain and flooding in February, while rain continued in California throughout March and April.

Now, Wendy’s is experimenting with growing lettuce in greenhouses to avoid weather-related disruptions in the future.

Customers were surprised to find their regular burgers are being served without lettuce, and some also said they had no tomatoes.

“I ordered six Singles today… it only had onions and ketchup”, wrote one of them on X. “I think the lettuce and tomato took the day off.”

Another shared a photo of their lettuce-less burger and wrote, “Wendy’s, ordered a Jr. cheeseburger with bacon (among other items) – and I know there’s a lettuce supply issue – but where’s the tomato slice?”

Another restaurant reported problems when trying to order their favorite salad.

I’m a former McDonald’s chef, and there’s a big reason why Wendy’s bacon is consistently better than McDonald’s

“I went to two different Wendy’s and they didn’t have lettuce on my salad. Like, that’s crazy.”

Servers at affected Wendy’s restaurants are informing customers about the shortage before they place their orders.

Wendy’s has 6,200 locations all over the countryalthough not all places are affected.

The company said DailyMail.com is working hard to resolve the shortage, but it could be months before an alternative lettuce supplier is found.

New Wendy’s Items

Wendy’s recently introduced some new menu items, including:

In 2020, Wendy’s began a project in Canada to grow lettuce in greenhouses, which could prevent problems of this type in the future.

“We are seeing more extreme climate events. It’s really about supply assurance, that you can create a more stable, less volatile supply,” said the head of corporate and sustainability Wendy’s official Liliana Esposito said Bloomberg last year.

This isn’t the first time a fast food restaurant has faced lettuce shortages.

In late 2022, a similar issue affected Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, and Subway.
