On the Costco subreddit, one user implored customers to ask warehouse employees about the most ridiculous returns they’ve witnessed.

“Next time you hear back, ask the associate what the stupidest thing they processed was,” they wrote.

“I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.”

They asked a customer service employee themselves and were shocked by the answer.

“One guy said a woman returned a diamond earring because she lost the other one. She got half the purchase price back,” the user said.

However, returns like this are not uncommon in the world of Costco returns, especially in the jewelry department.

Another buyer brought thousands of dollars worth of jewelry.

In the same subreddit, a user explained how a member returned three pieces of jewelry to the warehouse, worth $11,000.

“In the last three years, she spent $54,000 in total and returned $44,000,” they said.

The buyer received cash for most of her jewelry purchases but was prohibited from returning jewelry to Costco.

CRAZY RETURNS

Other Reddit users exposed Costco shoppers who were reimbursed for outrageous returns.

One user described how he was making a reasonable return for an ill-fitting shirt when he saw several boxes containing dishes behind the customer service counter.

They asked an employee if the signs were faulty and were shocked by the answer.

“It turned out to be the first week of December and the employee said, ‘No, this happens every year after Thanksgiving when people borrow our dishes and return them,’” they wrote.

“Disgusting and unreal!”

Others have gone so far as to bring consumed food back to the retailer.

Membership and store cards offered by major retailers

Here’s a breakdown of the store cards offered to customers from various retailers and their benefits:

Costco:

  • Gold Star Membership: $60 per year, shop at all Costco stores and online with two additional cards for your family.
  • Executive Member: $120 per year, 2% annual rewards, discounts and additional benefits on Costco services, shop online and in-store and get two additional cards for home use.

Sam’s Club:

  • Club membership: $50 Per Year, Bonus Offers, Same Day Delivery, Instant Savings, Sam’s Club Mastercard, Members Only Fuel Savings, Tire & Battery Center, Free Membership and Complimentary Memberships.
  • More membership: $110 per year, all the benefits of Club membership plus Sam’s Cash, free shipping, free curbside pickup, advance purchases, and pharmacy and optical discounts.

Target:

  • Target Circle: A free rewards program that allows users to earn 1% in Target Circle Earnings rewards when a qualifying purchase is made, access personalized deals and offers, receive a birthday gift, and earn a vote to help direct how Target helps your community .
  • Target Circle Card: A credit, debit or reloadable card that offers users 5% off in-store and online, as well as exclusive offers, free two-day shipping and an additional 30-day return window. Formerly Target RedCard.

Walmart:

  • Walmart+: $12.95 per month or $98 per year with 30-day free trial. It offers members free delivery, free shipping with no minimum spend, fuel savings, Paramount+ subscription, car, Walmart+ travel, home drop-off, mobile scan and store entry, and early access to offers and product launches.

One user saw someone return a plastic container of nuts with only 5% remaining.

Another witnessed the woman in front of them return a cart full of half-eaten food.

“She literally got back about $400. It was crazy. She ate a lot of free food,” the user said.

Another member returned a worn out playset – they admitted they “shaked their heads a lot” but the warranty said three years.

Additionally, a Costco employee questioned “Aren’t you embarrassed?” after a member purchased $200 worth of meat and returned it “worth 13 cents.”
