Who founded Meijer?
Meijer was originally founded as Meijer’s, with the store’s first supermarket opening in 1934 in Greenville, Michigan.
The shop was founded by Hendrick Meijer, a Dutch immigrant and local barber.
Hendrick’s son, Frederick Meijer, later became the company’s president.
The supercenter’s current co-presidents, Hank and Doug, are Hendrick’s grandchildren.
By the 1960s, there were more than 25 stores located in the Midwest.
Meijer was unique in that it was one of the first stores to offer self-service shopping, shopping carts and discounted prices for everyday needs.
It also “pioneered” the supercenter concept, offering groceries and department store items in a single store.
Today, there are more than 250 locations in the Midwest, with more than 70 thousand employees.
