KROGER announced that it has introduced cash receipts at multiple locations in a major U.S. city.
The retail giant confirmed that its policy has changed at six Kroger locations in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.
This supermarket chain explained that it has introduced periodic checks at these branches.
Receipt checks are a measure many stores have implemented to control theft and ensure customers pay the correct prices.
They involve an employee waiting between the register and the store exit.
Customers may then be asked to show proof of purchase when leaving the retailer.
Kroger confirmed that checks at these new stores would not happen to all customers every time they leave the store.
The six affected stores are Hyde Park Kroger, St. Bernard Kroger, Norwood Kroger, Oakley Kroger Marketplace, Kroger On-The-Rhine and Kroger University Plaza.
The retailer cited security and theft concerns for the new measure, according to the Cincinnati Inquisitor.
“At Kroger, we are committed to providing access to fresh, essential foods. Safety is one of our core values and guides everything we do,” said the Kroger spokesperson.
“In response to the increase in theft incidents, we recently implemented additional security measures at six Cincinnati-area stores, including periodic receipt checks.
“Although early in the implementation, we have received positive feedback from associates and customers.”
This news drew an angry response from some shoppers who complained about the stores’ payment methods.
Some customers argued, on a Facebook publishthat these stores should have implemented more in-person checkouts instead of self-checkouts.
“If they want to make sure everything is being done correctly, they should hire more cashiers,” said one commenter.
“Maybe Kroger could use these record profits (not just profits) to hire cashiers instead of self-checkout, which contributes to the shoplifting problem,” said another person.
