One PROMINENT retailer currently has the best egg prices for American consumers, and it may not be who they would suspect.

Food costs remain high along with inflation, although both appear to be stabilizing.

Eggs reached an all-time high in January 2023, at an average price of $4.82 per dozen per data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

O Consumer Price Index (IPC) at the time also increased by 6.4% compared to the previous year.

As of April 2024, eggs cost nearly half what they have since, costing shoppers on average about $2.86.

The IPC only rose about 0.3% compared to April 2023.

With the data considered, it will be easier for Americans to find more affordable eggs.

An increase in avian influenza (bird flu) negated this, slightly following an outbreak in some poultry facilities in the United States, Japan and several other countries, for CBS News.

The cost of eggs has already increased by around 16% since January 2024.

Some shoppers are starting to stock up before the $2.86 average rises once again, and Kroger may be the better option for most compared to other popular retailers.

VALUE OF OVO-CELENTE

Kroger’s 12 count large white eggs are just $2.09.

That’s 77 cents below the national average and a bargain for shoppers looking for the best discount on the next dozen they buy.

Kroger launches new fulfillment program at eight locations in same state after Walmart Health closes all 51 centers

Walmart’s Great Value brand dozen is second best at $2.48, still not bad and below average.

Target’s Good & Gather is a little more expensive at $2.79.

All three stores are great options depending on customer preference and which option might be a more affordable trip.

Those looking for the best price should avoid Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods when purchasing eggs.

How to reduce the cost of your grocery store

BELOW are some tips on how to reduce the amount you spend on shopping.

  • Write a list for yourself – Buy only items you need. If it’s not on your list, don’t add it to your cart
  • Create a budget – Create a weekly budget for your food shopping
  • Never buy hungry – You are much more likely to buy more food if your tummy is growling
  • Do not buy pre-cut vegetables or fruits – The extra they charge for cutting can be eye-watering
  • Use social media – Follow your favorite retailers to find out about the latest offers
  • Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
  • Check the fine print – It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/liter when comparing offers so you make an equal decision, as a bigger box doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get more
  • Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up for all of them. They all work a little differently – find out which bonus suits you best and remember to redeem your points for additional rewards

ATTENTION

Trader Joe’s large pasture-raised brown eggs cost $4.79, closer to the inflated average cost as of January 2023.

It’s important to note that pasture-raised eggs tend to always be a little more expensive in any store.

Likewise, pasture-raised brown eggs from Whole Foods cost $4.99.

Customers looking for quality over price may choose any retailer over Target, Walmart, and Kroger.

Some of the brands are speaking out about food prices and the actions they are taking to reduce costs for customers.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon confirmed earlier this month that the company would lower prices.

Target also detailed plans to reduce prices on about 1,500 products this summer.
