A SHOPPER has criticized Aldi’s new paper bag design.
They claimed the retailer charges more for the eco-friendly option but offers less functionality.
There are no handles on the paper bags and each one comes in a smaller size compared to plastic bags, according to the angry customer.
“So @AldiUSA paper bags are more expensive, no longer have handles, have gotten smaller and break more easily?” they asked in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
“Mathematics is not mathematics.”
Aldi quickly responded to the complaint.
“We apologize for any inconvenience,” replied the brand.
The customer was asked to contact Aldi’s customer service team directly to resolve the issue.
It is unclear whether they ever asked for further assistance.
Aldi’s rollout of paper bags began after it announced it would phase them out in 2022.
The company has set a goal of eliminating plastic bags at its more than 2,300 locations nationwide by the end of 2023.
In January this year, Aldi confirmed that it was the first major retailer in the United States to completely stop offering plastic bags.
Several thousand tonnes of plastic have been saved from going to landfill due to Aldi’s efforts.
It also plans to continue making environmentally conscious changes in the coming years.
KEEP IT MOVING
Aldi said it would fully transition to natural soft drinks in stores by 2035.
Starting this year, the company has already purchased natural soft drinks for new and recently renovated stores.
Aldi conditions

Aldi has several store policies that customers should be aware of. The US Sun has compiled a short list for shoppers’ next visit to their local store.
- Customers pay a quarter for a cart and can get their coin back once they return it to the appropriate location.
- There are no baggers and customers typically bag their purchases or cashiers offer assistance.
- Aldi places products in the aisles with the same packaging they were shipped in from suppliers to save customers money.
- Full refunds and exchanges are given through Aldi’s Twice as Nice policy for all Aldi branded items that customers are not satisfied with.
- No plastic bags are sold in any Aldi store.
- Reusable and paper bags are offered to customers.
Aldi said around 600 stores will have soft drinks by the end of the year, cutting 60% of its carbon emissions.
The retailer has already reduced its carbon emissions by around 50% since 2015.
Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi US, emphasized in a statement that the company would not only “protect the environment” with its efforts, but also save on operational costs that it could then pass on to customers.
“As one of America’s fastest-growing retailers, we take seriously our responsibility to lead the industry in sustainability so our customers don’t have to choose between shopping responsibly and saving money,” said Hart.
Aldi has recently caught fans’ attention for reasons other than paper bags.
One lucky customer said they found a 75% discount at their local and ensured they “left some for others”.
Others rushed to get their hands on an “unreal” fireworks light that would give the ultimate summer glow.
