Customers can return most items at almost any time after purchase if they do not meet their needs.

Unfortunately, some buyers take advantage of the generous policy.

A Reddit user claiming to be a Costco employee explained what happened to a customer who went too far in trying to get a refund.

“A woman once threw old, slimy asparagus at me because I told her that since she bought the food on EBT (food stamps), she absolutely should go back to her EBT card,” they wrote on publish.

“She demanded money. I said no, nor did we demand it.”

Federal law states that SNAP recipients cannot receive money back from their accounts.

“I was about to call a manager when she threw the products at me,” the Reddit user continued.

“Yada Yada Yada…we have revoked your membership for over $100 in food returns.”

The employee said the situation happens occasionally and others have shared similar stories.

“A kid in my college class got ostracized for buying and returning laptops every three months,” one person wrote.

Costco Membership: Limits and Prohibitions

“My husband kept buying TVs and returning them after a few months when he tried to find one he liked,” added another.

“He ended up being banned from returning any other electronic devices for 6 months.

“He was mortified and we still tease him about it.”

THE FINE PRINT

Numerous stipulations in Costco’s membership terms and conditions warn of membership revocation.

“Costco reserves the right to refuse membership to any applicant, and membership may be terminated at Costco’s discretion and without cause,” the contract says.

The return policy also has certain limits for selected items.

Electronics must be returned within 90 days of the buyer receiving the product.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

Diamonds 1 carat or larger must be returned within 48 hours with all original documentation.

Jewelry will also be inspected for authenticity.

Items with a limited shelf life, such as batteries, tires and Christmas trees, cannot be returned.

A customer had his membership revoked after trying to return a printer six years after purchasing it.

Another customer shared a way to shop at Costco without a membership.
