WALMART shoppers are warning each other to avoid jail over a controversial new self-checkout rule.

The rule was first introduced in March and was met with an incredible backlash.

Walmart has given store managers the power to close certain self-checkout registrations for all customers except those who are Walmart+ members.

As this membership costs 98 dollars per year, the new rule did not please consumers.

“If I have to pay to buy a product in any store, I will never buy from that chain of stores again,” one of them wrote on Twitter. X recently.

Another shared his sentiment.

“First, they made me do someone else’s job by implementing self-checkout,” they wrote.

“Now they want me to pay them to do someone else’s job. I hate Walmart.”

“If you take jobs away from people, replacing them with computers/robots wasn’t bad enough, now they’re charging already paying customers to use self-checkout?” asked another.

“They’re not on the payroll.”

One called it “paying for the privilege of being your own cashier and bagger.”

“I think I will KrogerAldi’s, HEB on principle,” said another.

Access to all self-checkout lanes isn’t the only benefit of being a Walmart+ member.

Members enjoy unlimited free deliveries with no minimum order fee, plus free grocery delivery from your local store.

Members can benefit from fuel discounts up to 10 cents per gallon at more than 14,000 locations, including popular gas stations like Exxon, Mobil, Walmart and Murphy.

Subscription costs $12.95 per month, with the flexibility to cancel at any time, or $98 for the annual plan.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

Since its launch in 2020, the program has accumulated 59 million subscribers, which represents about 23% of the US population.

The price has not increased since its launch.

However, at $98 per year, Walmart+ is more expensive than a Costco Gold Star membership or a Sam’s Club membership.
