A WALMART shopper said he is still experiencing pricing issues when using the store’s self-service machines.

The chain recently admitted to errors in 1,600 stores, which led to some customers being overcharged.

A Walmart shopper shared his experience with the store’s pricing issues on Facebook after being significantly overcharged for a purchase.

As the photographs showed, the self-checkout cashier displayed a price of $4.97 for the chicken tenders when they instead scanned a shopping bag, priced at eight cents.

“Imagine a family I used four bags and scanned them without realizing it… it’s almost $20 when it should be 32 cents,” they wrote.

The Facebook user explained: “I do a lot of shopping, so I go in and out of Walmart and safe way daily.

“And obviously I’m very price conscious, so I feel it’s my duty to bring this to the attention of other buyers.

“You might want to check your receipts.”

STORAGE ERRORS

Walmart recently admitted that about 1,600 stores experienced pricing errors at self-checkout counters.

On March 19, Walmart suffered an internal system failure that prevented pricing data from flowing to self-checkout booths, according to documents seen by Bloomberg News.

Prices were higher and lower at self-checkout stations than sticker prices.

Walmart is changing the price tag on every item in its stores — but this will prevent surprises at shoppers’ checkouts

The retailer has not released information on how many people were affected or how much in total customers were overcharged.

Walmart also refused to disclose which items were mispriced or even how long the problem persisted.

More than 80% of overcharged customers were refunded when the technical issue was resolved, a Walmart spokesperson told Bloomberg in a statement.

A representative explained that it is “impossible for any company to innovate and introduce new technologies into their system without assuming some level of potential disruption risk.”

US$45 MILLION AGREEMENT

This is not the first time that Walmart has overcharged its customers.

A Lawyer’s Top 5 Receipt Checking Tips

Los Angeles attorney Camron Dowlatshahi spoke with The US Sun about receipt checks and a customer’s rights and options when asked to show their receipt.

  1. There has been a lot of debate surrounding the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it’s in the store, it’s completely legal. “Apparently there is nothing illegal about this. You are still on the company premises and the reason for doing this is to avoid theft”, confirms Dowlatshahi.
  2. However, if they’re kicking you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location is important,” he explained. “If you’re outside the store, you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of stealing and that you have to show the receipt, I think it’s a little bit of a different situation because now you’re in your way.”
  3. Although customers can say no to receipt checks, it can cause problems if you do so and the store suspects you of stealing. “You might say no, maybe it will create an unnecessary hassle for you because now you might have the police coming to your house and following up,” Dowlatshahi said.
  4. If you’re being blocked from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you may have legal action – but the store must have detained you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus to do it,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a client has been emotionally traumatized by being detained for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] process.”
  5. “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s a very simple thing to do. If you haven’t stolen anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

The retailer agreed to a $45 million settlement to resolve complaints of overcharging customers who purchased heavy goods.

The deal applies to customers who purchased eligible products between October 19, 2018 and January 19, 2024.

Payments are worth up to $500 per customer.

Customers are saying they will “never shop at Walmart again” because of a new self-checkout rule.
