The company announced that the Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Davenport stores will close on June 23.

“No company wants to close a location and that certainly includes Hy-Vee,” the company wrote in a press release.

“Over the past few weeks, we have heard from community leaders and residents about the impact of closing our stores in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Davenport.

“Unfortunately, these three stores have been losing significant amounts of money for several years and it is simply no longer viable for us to operate any longer.”

Hy-Vee promised it would work on solutions to help customers buy groceries after nearby stores close.

On Tuesday, the company announced it would offer free grocery delivery to shoppers.

Customers can sign up for the service until September 1 by calling 800-772-4098.

To sign up, users must have a computer, smartphone or tablet. The service only accepts credit cards as a method of payment.

A minimum order of $24.95 is required to place an order.

Hy-Vee will also provide free transportation three days a week from closed stores to the location where pharmacy prescriptions are transferred to customers.

Large supermarket chain with 150 points of sale confirms permanent closure of store doors – the shutters are already closed

The transport schedule is:

  • Mondays: 10am to 2pm
  • Wednesdays: 5pm to 9pm
  • Saturdays: 10am to 2pm

CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS

Despite Hy-Vee’s accommodations, shoppers are furious about the closures.

“Hy-Vee will discontinue service if they don’t make a million dollars a month from it! That’s how Hy-Vee works!” wrote one customer on Facebook.

“If Hyvee is closing stores, it’s not because it values its customers. They remind me of mediacom. The financial value versus the customer value is clear,” added another buyer.

One customer pointed out that most people shopping in Cedar Rapids are elderly and low-income and do not have access to vehicles or cannot transport their purchases to the bus.

“This is a bad decision,” they added.

Hy-Vee Closing Statement

On June 10, 2024, Hy-Vee released a press release regarding the closure of three locations in Iowa.

“No company wants to close a location and that certainly includes Hy-Vee,” the grocery chain wrote, per local CBS and Fox affiliate WHBF.

“Over the past few weeks, we have heard from community leaders and residents about the impact of closing our stores in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Davenport.

“Unfortunately, these three stores have been losing significant amounts of money for several years and it is simply no longer viable for us to operate them.

“However, we have been working to implement viable solutions to ease the transition for the community.”

Hy-Vee will continue to offer residents of Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Davenport, Iowa, access to free pharmacy delivery.

“We have been doing this for the past few years for all residents of these cities and will continue to do so.

“Customers are encouraged to visit our store pharmacy teams if they have additional questions about this service.”

Hy-Vee is also working with landlords to try to fill vacancies in each store that closes so that the property is not left empty after the stores close.

“We are not placing a ‘use restriction’ on any of these three locations,” the company said in the statement.

To help local families in need while school is closed for the summer, Hy-Vee is working with HACAP in Cedar Rapids, the River Bend Food Bank in Davenport and the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo to operate several distribution events of food in July and August 2024.

“We value our customers and communities,” the press release said.

“As a large employer in the area, we remain committed to supporting our local schools, food banks and other nonprofit organizations.

“That’s what we’ve always done and will continue to do.”

Per KGANThe three Iowa Hy-Vees scheduled to close on Sunday, June 23, 2024, include:

  • The location of First Avenue in Cedar Rapids
  • Logan Avenue location in Waterloo
  • Rockingham Road location in Davenport

Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell said the decision to close the store is “incredibly disappointing.”

“Generations of customers have trusted this store for their basic needs. It is unfortunate that the company is leaving at a time when nearby neighborhoods are seeing significant improvements and public investment,” O’Donnell said, according to the ABC affiliate. KCRG.

Walgreens also announced several closings, with one location scheduled to close this week.

A popular fast food joint has also announced its closure, and customers think high prices are the reason.
