A COSTCO member was reimbursed for a purchase without the product or printed receipt in hand.
The unlikely return left the buyer shocked to get his money back.
They expected to be turned away by Costco employees immediately during their attempt, but the brand has a notoriously relaxed return policy.
This meant that the member’s objection fell within the parameters that Costco would consider valid for a refund.
The anonymous customer explained that he found himself in a unique situation while at his local Costco two years ago after purchasing vegetarian lasagna.
“The plastic trays were destroyed when I opened the box,” they said in a post on Reddit.
“Initially I assumed the loss. But the following week I noticed there was no queue at customer service.”
“I went without product or a printed receipt and told him what happened and asked if there was anything he could do,” the member added.
To her surprise, the Costco employee looked up the purchase in the retailer’s system to confirm it and refunded her instantly, “no questions asked.”
“I don’t get back much, maybe that helped,” the member speculated.
“Maybe times have changed.”
Several shoppers responded with similar stories, noting that Costco would only refuse returns if a member appeared to be “abusing the system.”
TEMPORARY PROHIBITION
This happened to a customer who purchased several flat-screen TVs from Costco and returned them until he found one he liked.
They were later banned from returning electronics for six months.
Electronics and technology are some of the few Costco merchandise categories that have stipulations like a 90-day return period.
Alcohol, cigarettes and several others have different contingencies.
Costco Return Policy

What are the details of the famous return policy?
“We guarantee your satisfaction with every product we sell and will refund the purchase price,” said the return policy States.
There are some exceptions to this 100% satisfaction guarantee, which are:
- Electronics – Returns will be accepted within 90 days from the date the member received the product.
- Diamonds – 1.00 ct or larger must be returned with all original documentation within 48 hours and will be inspected for authenticity.
- Cigarettes and alcoholic beverages – These items cannot be returned by law.
- Items with a limited shelf life, such as batteries and tires, cannot be returned.
- Special order kiosk and custom installed programs may only be returned or refunded if under warranty repair/replacement.
- Gold bars, silver bars and coins are non-refundable.
- Store Cards are non-refundable.
- Airline and live performance event items are non-refundable.
Costco memberships can be canceled and refunded at any time if the customer is dissatisfied.
Other than that, Costco’s return policy has a “100% satisfaction guarantee.”
TAKE IT BACK
The generous rule saw similar refunds based on food and other unexpected refunds.
One member witnessed one of his fellow buyers return more than $200 worth of half-eaten, half-cooked meats.
Others called for the retailer to “do something about the abuse” over the return of half-eaten watermelons and broccoli.
Some have successfully recovered 10-year-old mattresses with pee stains.
One lucky member was able to return two old toilets without any problems.
