California residents can enroll in one of the state’s tax credit and rebate programs that reward homeowners who install solar panels.

The Golden State is rewarding citizens who decide to use clean energy with financial benefits worth up to $15,000.

Perhaps the biggest incentive is offered within the scope of Disadvantaged Communities – Single Family Solar Energy Houses (DAC-SASH).

The average cost of installing solar in California is $2.51 per watt, while this program offers a $3 per watt incentive for low-income households.

This means the full cost of installing the solar panels will be covered, plus a few extras.

That’s a huge savings considering the average cost of installing a 6 kW system in California is $15,060, according to US Energy Administration.

There are several eligibility criteria required to apply for the DAC-SASH program.

Your home must be located in one of the 25% most disadvantaged communities in the state, as identified by California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool.

You must be a Pacific customer Gas & Electric (PG&E), San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) or Southern California Edison (SCE).

And your family income must be below the CARE Income Guidelineswhich costs $62,400 for a family of four.

I live completely off the grid in a box truck – it’s a tiny house on wheels with a kitchen, big screen TV and air conditioning

Applications for the DAC-SASH program can be made directly online.

Even if you’re not ready to install solar panels yet, there are good News.

The program will remain open until 2030.

OTHER ENERGY BENEFITS

Another financial incentive is available to Californians through the Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP), which offers rebates for energy storage systems.

States with solar incentives

The following states currently offer some type of financial incentive for installing solar panels

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • new York
  • New Jersey
  • Ohio

  • Virginia

The incentive is worth US$0.15 per watt-hour (Wh) of battery storage capacity.

Homeowners can install battery banks along with solar panels to create a 24/7 power supply that can be used at night, on cloudy days, or during blackouts.

There is no income limit to apply for this program, however, applicants must be a customer of one of the following energy companies:

  • PG&E
  • ODS&E
  • SCE
  • Southern California Gas (SoCalGas)

Meanwhile, Texans can receive up to $3,000 for solar energy.

And Atlanta, Georgia, is rewarding those who take part in cycling with a $2,000 discount.
