A FRUSTRATED Target customer screamed after a recent shopping experience left him waiting in long queues.

They are now calling on the retailer to take action and improve checkout areas across its 1,956 stores.

Complaints about long wait times were among several that shopper Miriam cited in an angry complaint to Target.

“@Target, someone needs to hear this,” they fumed in a publish to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday morning.

Miriam specifically cited her local store in Hackensack, New Jersey as the location of the alleged problems.

They called it “the worst target I’ve ever been on.”

“Products are opened/used.

“I hate every second I spend there.”

Target quickly responded to the shopper’s complaints, noting that it “doesn’t like hearing that store shelves are empty and there are long checkout lines.”

The company assured Miriam that they would send someone to visit the store and determine if improvements were needed.

While some of the shopper complaints may be store-specific, mentions of closed self-checkout lanes and long wait times have been echoed by Target customers across the country this year.

VERIFICATION MANIA

The retailer caused significant controversy after permanently implementing a 10-item limit on self-checkout.

The policy was tested in at least 200 locations in the fall of 2023, but officially went into effect in March.

Target noted the change as a way to create a more efficient checkout experience for shoppers looking for just a few items, and would subsequently help prevent inventory loss due to incorrectly scanned merchandise.

While some called the change positive, others felt the retailer had not accommodated the influx of customers who would now need to go to registers with more than 10 items when using self-checkout in the past.

A shopper recently begged the local Target to “open more than 2 lanes.”

What is Target Circle 360?

In April, Target launched its first paid membership program, Target Circle 360.

For $99 per year ($49 if you sign up before May 18), members have access to the following perks:

  • Unlimited, free same-day delivery on orders over $35
  • Another 30 days to return your items
  • Free two-day shipping on 100,000 items
  • 5% discount in store and online
  • Automatic offers and exclusive benefits for partners

Others abandoned their items completely after spotting queues at self-checkout, with one angry customer saying: “I left my stuff on the floor and walked away.”

CLOSED FOR BUSINESS

Miriam’s note about closed self-checkouts was also noted at select Target locations.

Customers and employees have confirmed that some stores will close self-checkout areas at certain times of the day.

For example, a certain location may have kiosks open from 8am to 12pm and then close them for the rest of the day, or open them at 4pm until closing.

Times for self-checkout closures are determined on a location-by-location basis.

Some Target customers are also upset about the retailer’s security measures, including locking some items behind glass.

Target even recently updated thousands of stores with an artificial intelligence addition, which supposedly “improves the experience.”
