A COSTCO shopper cried foul after experiencing long wait times during checkout.

The member complained that the checkout lines during a recent trip to the local store were so crowded that they reached several other aisles.

They filed their complaints in response to a customer who said he was going to Costco looking for lower prices on a large grocery purchase, hoping to spend less than $180.

“I just left there. It’s a circus,” said member Rob. he wrote back to X, formerly Twitter, for the shopper who was on his way to pick up the items he needed.

“Absolutely packed.”

Rob stated that the self-checkout line was so long at his local Costco that the lines extended into the “coffee aisle.”

It’s unclear why checkouts were delayed, but it could be due to a new signal that members recently spotted at self-checkout at Costco locations across the country.

NOTIFIED MEMBERS

The retailer began cracking down on subscription sharing in recent months and has since posted signs at self-service kiosks reminding customers that cards will be scanned and verified.

“Members are required to show their membership card when entering any Costco warehouse and when checking out at a cash register,” the signs said.

Whether customers use kiosks or have cashiers to help them through the payment process, membership cards and IDs must always be shown from now on.

Other, stricter measures are also being taken by some Costco stores to ensure subscriptions are not shared.

Some locations implemented scanners as members made dramatic claims that the next company would be “implanting microchips” in customers.

Others fear getting in trouble for sharing a card and having their membership revoked.

Those with a Gold Star or Executive membership at Costco can only have two membership cards per family.

Two guests per card can be brought into the store, and additional authorized cardholders can be added for an extra fee.

CHECK REFUSED

Along with the membership sharing reminder, some Costco members are still unhappy with the warehouse retailer’s self-checkouts for other reasons.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

A frustrated customer used Costco’s self-checkout during a recent trip, even though he argued that he was essentially doing an employee’s job.

They decided to take a stand on their way out and refused a Costco employee’s receipt check.

“You can trust me to do the self-checkout or you can put the registers back where they used to be,” they fumed in a post to X.

“If you want me to be an untrained cashier, that’s your problem, not mine.”

A longtime Costco customer also said he was leaving the retailer for good following price changes.

Another said they were canceling their subscription for a similar reason, claiming it “doesn’t save money” at the store.
