As Walmart gradually raises wages for its estimated one million hourly workers, the retailer has no choice but to take steps to absorb the costs.

The retailer decided to do this by increasing employee productivity to offset higher wages.

Earlier this month, Walmart announced that it will change the way it labels its more than 120,000 products.

The store has plans to switch its thousands of paper price tags to digital labels at its 2,300 U.S. locations by 2026.

THREE BENEFITS

O official statement about Walmart’s new technology was written by Daniela Boscan, food and consumables team leader at Walmart in Texas.

“Working with DSLs has transformed my daily routine,” she began, listing three key benefits of digital price tags.

The first benefit cited by Boscan was increased productivity.

She noted that because new price tags can be updated with just a few clicks, “a price change that used to take a member two days to update now takes just a few minutes with the new DSL system.”

This can mean more savings for shoppers, as instant price updates mean instant savings when a product is discounted.

Increased productivity also frees up employee time to serve customers.

Boscan listed simplified stock replenishment as a second benefit.

The new “Stock to Light” feature allows employees to read digital labels to flag which areas of products need attention, making it easier for employees to identify these areas as they stock shelves.

Walmart’s team leader cited the “Pick to Light” feature as a third employee benefit.

It enables faster online order selection and fulfillment by guiding associates to items in online orders while improving order accuracy.

BUYER’S FEAR

The new price tags will benefit shoppers by enabling greater employee assistance, increasing the accuracy of online orders, and increasing the speed at which discounts are displayed.

However, many Walmart customers worry that electronic tags will hurt their wallets.

Digital Price Tags

Digital price tags, or electronic shelf labels (ESLs), were first used in stores in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Kohl’s first launched digital price tags in 2013 as part of its effort to modernize and enhance the shopping experience.

Other retailers like Target, Best Buy, Nordstrom and Macy’s have utilized digital price tags in a similar way.

Tags allow for real-time updates on prices, promotions and product information.

“Prices change so often (always up, never down) that Walmart is switching from plastic price tags to digital price tags on the shelves of all its grocery stores nationwide,” criticized one shopper on Facebook.

“They’re going from state to state, but they expect the move to be complete by the end of the year. Jesus Christ! They found a way to digitally screw us!”

However, a Walmart executive shared that shoppers have nothing to fear.

“There’s no way it’s going to be that one minute it’s going to be that price and the next hour it’s not going to be that price,” said Greg Cathey, senior vice president of transformation and innovation.
