WALMART announced it will close two more locations in a single state in just a few weeks.
The two closures are bad news for shoppers as they will be forced to travel further to buy essential items.
Walmart has plans to shut down two locations in Georgia on July 12.
The affected locations are the Walmart on Ashford Dunwoody Road in Dunwoody and the Neighborhood Market on Roswell Road in Marietta.
Georgia stores were informed of the impending closures on June 14.
295 employees at the Dunwoody store will be affected, as will the 92 workers in Marietta.
Both locations are being closed due to poor performance.
“This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a careful and thoughtful review process,” Walmart shared in a press release.
“We have almost 5,000 stores in the US and, unfortunately, some do not meet our financial expectations.
“While our underlying business is strong, this store has not performed as well as we had hoped.”
News of the two shutters comes amid a series of Walmart closings.
Walmarts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Fremont, California, closed their doors last month, while a store in Aurora, Colorado closed earlier this month.
Additionally, weeks before Georgia’s shutdown, Walmart closed all 51 of its U.S. health centers and virtual care services.
Launched in 2019, the centers “were not a sustainable business model for us to continue”, according to the company.
WALMART CHALLENGES
Following the news about the Georgia shutters and concerns from community members, Mayor Lynn Deutsch of Dunwoody spoke out.
The mayor posted declaration to his official Facebook page expressing dismay.

So far, Walmart has closed the following stores in 2024:
- San Diego, California – February 9
- El Cajon, California – February 9
- Columbus, Ohio – February 16
- West Covina, California – March 29
- Towson, Maryland – April 5
- Granite Bay, California – April 12
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin – May 19
- Fremont, California – May 24
- Aurora, Colorado – June 7
“I am surprised and disappointed that Wal-Mart has announced that the Ashford-Dunwoody store is closing,” she wrote earlier this month.
She went on to express concern for Walmart workers, writing, “We are worried about the employees, some of whom have been there a long time.”
The closure also poses a challenge for residents who rely on the two Walmarts for shopping.
They will now be forced to travel further to shop at the nearest Walmart or will need to shop elsewhere.
