WALMART shoppers are fed up with the retailer’s outdated checkout technology, which forced a customer to leave the store.

The checkout hassle has led many other shoppers to abandon Walmart in favor of rival retailers.

Walmart is the largest retailer in the world, with billions of dollars in annual revenue and many innovations in the technology space.

However, the retailer falls short in one area – Walmart doesn’t accept Apple Pay at any of its more than 10,000 locations.

The mobile wallet service digitizes credit and debit cards, allowing shoppers to make contactless payments and ditch their physical wallets.

Although Apple launched the service ten years ago, Walmart has not yet integrated it into its payment systems – and its customers are not satisfied.

“Now I remember why I don’t shop at Walmart,” shared user X after experiencing complications at checkout.

“I forgot they don’t have Apple Pay, I went to my car, got my wallet and paid for my stuff,” they wrote.

A second user criticized the retailer, saying “Walmart needs to stop being childish and get Apple Pay.”

Other shoppers have similarly criticized Walmart, with some saying they avoid the retailer entirely because it doesn’t accept Apple Pay and one even calling it an “evolutionary malfunction.”

CEO SPEAKS

Amid numerous customer complaints, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon shared why the retailer doesn’t support Apple Pay on the Stratechery podcast.

McMillon noted that the main reason was that Walmart wanted customers to use its app to pay.

“When it comes to payment specifically, that’s one of the things we’d like people to use our app for,” he shared, referring to Walmart Pay.

The retailer’s mobile payment service works similarly to Apple Pay.

After scanning their items at checkout, shoppers open Walmart Pay and hold their phone over the cash register QR code to pay.

Although the service is intended to simplify the payment process, many Walmart shoppers disagreed with it.

“This Walmart Pay shit is inefficient,” criticized user X, who said that his transaction was not carried out three times.

Why doesn’t Walmart offer Apple Pay?

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon revealed why stores don’t offer Apple Pay on Stratechery with Ben Thompson.

While the retailer’s use of Apple Pay has been an ongoing conversation, McMillon emphasized that “we would like customers to open our app in store all the time.”

The app can be used to help find items in the store, but it can also be used to pay for your purchases.

“That’s one of the things we’d like people to use our app for,” he said.

They abandoned their shopping and went to Target, where they successfully used Apple Pay.

A second shopper criticized Walmart for not accepting Apple Pay.

“Walmart is so stingy about that Walmart Pay shit, man it’s literally the same thing as Apple Pay, just scan a QR instead, LMAO let us use Apple Pay,” they wrote.

In related news, a shopper canceled his Walmart+ subscription because he refused to pay extra for free services.

Additionally, Walmart shoppers are forced to walk “half a mile” to return their carts and claim they will resolve the issue themselves.
