COSTCO customers have been frustrated with self-checkouts as the store location removes them entirely.

The kiosk’s closure was discovered by a member during a recent trip, and they were shocked by the warehouse retailer’s decision.

“Self-checkout is over!!” they exclaimed in a publish on Reddit.

“Are we ending self-checkout nationwide?” they questioned.

The shopper continued to explain that he arrived at his local Costco in Edison, New Jersey, in early June and discovered that all the kiosks had been removed.

“Surprisingly (not surprised) the lines moved quickly and did not retreat down the hall,” they wrote.

Others were excited about the news, completely criticizing Costco’s self-checkout process.

“Good! Costco has the wrong self-checkout system and they don’t trust anyone to use it, so it’s useless,” one member argued.

“I’m generally in favor of self-checkout, buying from Costco is the worst,” commented another.

“Self-checkout isn’t working because they don’t trust their customers with the handheld scanners,” said a third.

This isn’t the first time Costco has eliminated self-checkout.

The warehouse retailer removed all of its kiosks in 2013 but brought back what are now self-checkout express lanes in 2019.

The Edison location is likely just one of the few that have removed express self-checkout lanes entirely as of this year.

WAITING GAME

Still, many cited problems with the self-service option.

Several claimed that the lines are so crowded that they reach several aisles away from the checkout area.

Some also saw signs posted next to kiosks that reminded customers of Costco’s crackdown on subscriptions.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

“Members are required to present their membership card when entering any Costco warehouse and when checking out at a cash register,” the sign read.

“Membership cards are not transferable. Only paying members can make purchases.”

STOP AND CHECK

Valid photo identification is also required with membership card verification.

Several Costco locations are even experimenting with other methods to check membership at the door.

A customer recently stated that his store was “requiring” digital verification through the Costco mobile app on his phone.

Select stores in California also began testing a method earlier this year that would scan and identify signatures on the door while angry customers would “cause chaos.”
