A new ONE-TIME checkout feature has been discovered by Costco members at their local store.
Some say the offering makes the payment process faster and more efficient than the retailer’s self-checkout kiosks.
“I was at Costco the other day and saw rather long lines on a weekend, as always happens,” Chris, a Costco member, wrote in a publish to Facebook earlier this month.
“But they added a new feature.”
Chris explained that while he was waiting in line with his shopping cart, about four people away from the cashier kiosks, an employee approached him with a handheld scanner.
The employee began scanning his Costco membership card and then all of his items, which he said were only about 15, and then walked away to help others and await his arrival at the register.
The moment Chris walked up to the register, he said all he needed to do was pay and leave after the cashier showed the total of the previously scanned items on the screen.
“That would already be done. Just pay quickly and go,” the Costco member noted.
“That’s cool. A little better than self-checkout.”
Another member commented and stated that a similar process had been happening for some time at select Costco stores in California.
“They’ve been doing this for a while in their California stores,” they responded.
SAM’S PRAISE
Others had not yet seen him appear at their locations.
“I wish my Costco had this,” one customer commented.
The scanning and subsequent payment process is likely to be implemented on a store-by-store and case-by-case basis.
A third shopper praised Sam’s Club over Costco for its Scan & Go feature, a perk that has gained considerable popularity in recent months.
“Sams Club has scan and go where you can scan into the app, pay on your phone and just leave, I wish Costco would adopt this,” they said.
Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.
- Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
- Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
- Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
- Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

They’re not alone in their preferences either, as several Costco and Sam’s Club shoppers praised the option.
Some Costco members even canceled their membership and went to Sam’s Club instead of Scan & Go and the frustrations with long lines and crowds.
VERIFICATION REQUIRED
Some have detailed concerns about other aspects of Costco this year.
The retailer recently began cracking down on signature sharing and tested new scanning methods to verify shoppers’ identities.
Shoppers have spotted a scanner tool at the entrance of some stores because they fear “the next step will be microchip implantation.”
One member also stated that their store was “requiring” all shoppers to download the Costco mobile app for entry and verification.
