SHOPPERS have spotted a new offering from BJ’s Wholesale that appears to follow suit with Sam’s Club.

The retailer is trying to win back customers who previously ended their subscriptions through an agreement on subscription costs.

One former BJ’s member who decided to return claimed he only needed to pay $25 a year.

BJ’s standard Club Card membership typically costs $55 per year for those who sign up, based on your website.

Benefits include sales of up to 25% off merchandise, combined coupon opportunities, gas discounts, curbside pickup, same-day delivery, and an additional free membership, among others.

Buyers can also add more members for an additional surcharge of $30 at a time.

A Club+ card membership costs $110 annually with additional benefits and perks, including two to three times back on rewards, rewards that don’t expire, and 2% back on most purchases.

Even so, the former member said he was able to renew his membership for less than half the price through coupons sent in the mail by BJ’s Wholesale.

SWEET ECONOMY

They quickly accepted the offer after identifying Costco’s membership costs, which they argued were “too high.”

“I was thinking about renewing my Costco membership but the price is too high so I went to BJ’s for $25 and got a new membership…” wrote the shopper, Jim, in a Facebook post this month.

Jim said the total costs of his annual Costco membership would be about $63 with tax, making the decision an easy one for him.

“Goodbye Costco, hello BJ,” he said.

Jim added that the postal coupon sealed the deal and Costco “doesn’t do that.”

SAM’S FIRST

Sam’s Club, on the other hand, did something similar during a recent promotion.

In late May, the warehouse retailer was offering 50% off its basic subscription for the same $25 price.

The promotion ran until the 31st of the month, with the Plus subscription offer dropping from US$110 to US$70.

It’s unclear whether the same goes for BJ’s Wholesale’s current offering.

Unlike BJ’s, the Sam’s Club deal was only available to new members.

Costco’s membership prices are still the same: $60 per year for Gold Star membership and $120 for Executive membership.

While some buyers like Jim have advertised membership costs, others are advertising merchandise prices.

One member recently said he was leaving Costco after 20 years and going to Sam’s Club because of the cost of some items.

Another claimed he was overcharged by about $2,000 and asked others to “check” their receipts thoroughly.
