At Costco self-checkout, a woman close to the Reddit user was trying to pay for her purchases when she encountered a problem, according to the publish.

After calling an employee for assistance, she was told a manager would be needed to complete her purchase.

Pressed for time, the woman expressed her frustration but was told there was nothing more the employee could do.

When the manager arrived, the situation changed, the user said.

The manager requested the woman’s identification and asked if the card she was using belonged to her husband.

After confirmation, the manager explained that she would need to check with the membership department.

After a brief wait, the manager returned with a decisive response, saying that the woman could not proceed with the checkout because she was not registered for the subscription and sharing the card was strictly prohibited, according to the Reddit user.

The woman left her items behind and left the store.

The Reddit user then heard the manager and employee discussing the consequences: the membership involved would be revoked due to reports of sharing.

Groceries were promptly reloaded onto a cart, awaiting refilling by another employee.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.
