A COSTCO shopper was forced to abandon a cart full of groceries due to one of the retailer’s strict card policies.

The policy comes after a series of member crackdowns, which led many shoppers to target the online retailer.

Costco has been tougher on membership policies since its growing reliance on self-checkout.

For example, buyers were turned away if their credit card or photo ID didn’t match the name on their membership card.

Others were denied food purchases because the added household member did not have their own card with their name and photo.

These strict policies proved problematic for one buyer.

BUYER’S CONFLICT

On a publish Taking to Facebook last November, Costco customer Tom Donner shared a “notice” about the membership rules.

He clarified that shoppers could no longer use their spouse’s card, which his wife discovered on her last trip to the grocery store.

His wife, Donna, was checking her $400 shopping cart when she was told she couldn’t proceed with the purchase because the signature was in Tom’s name and he wasn’t there.

“But they were nice enough to put all the groceries back on the shelf, as if Donna was going to put them back,” the shopper wrote.

“We have been members since 2008. No longer!”

Tom called Costco and asked why they don’t confirm your membership when you enter the store.

He was told that the store did not want to generate traffic at the entrance.

“I think it’s funny, considering they don’t let you leave without checking your receipt, even if they create a traffic jam,” the customer replied.

Tom later updated the post and shared that Costco “remediated” the situation and addressed how it was not handled appropriately.

“We appreciate their effort to resolve this,” he wrote.

CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS

Many shoppers in the comments section were shocked by how strict the policy was, calling Costco’s response “unrealistic” and “crazy.”

“Lately, I’ve been so crazy about going to Costco, checking my card at self-checkout like I stole someone’s card, and the whole spouse thing irritates me too,” said one customer.

Costco shoppers encountered varying reactions from employees when they violated the store’s card membership policies.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

One of them mentioned that they were still allowed to buy groceries, but were told that next time they wouldn’t be allowed to do so, calling the policy “ridiculous.”

Others, however, were openly denied purchasing groceries.

A customer wanted to help and buy her friend’s items because she had broken her leg and had a lot of medical bills.

However, the buyer was declined at checkout because her credit card did not match the name on the subscription as it belonged to a friend.

“I WOULD NEVER GET A MEMBERSHIP THERE IF THAT’S HOW THEY PLAY. Their politics are absolutely shit. Why does it matter where they make their profits? It’s money for their business. TAKE MY MONEY,” the buyer railed.

In related news, Americans can claim payments from a $2 million Costco shopping settlement and you don’t have to provide proof.

Additionally, a shopper saves $400 per month after canceling their Costco membership.
