A customer asked for a soda as a gift after purchasing his groceries and was shocked to see a 7-cent tax on his 69-cent purchase.

William Baumbach wrote in a Facebook post that the Costco location in Manassas, Virginia, charged him just over 10% tax.

“Costco in Manassas is charging 4% more sales tax on a drink in their food court,” he wrote in the publish.

“I asked to speak to the manager and he immediately said it’s automatic, and I said, ‘Sir, that’s no excuse to illegally charge a lot of sales tax.’”

He argued that the sales tax in Prince William County – about an hour from Washington D.C. – is 4% on food and beverages, and the state tax is 6% on beverage orders.

He said the full 10% tax applies “only if the drink is purchased and served with a meal.”

Baumbach shared a link to the county’s 2022 food and beverage tax guidelines, which state that beverages sold alone are not taxable.

However, a local buyer disagreed with Baumbach’s interpretation of tax law.

“Because the drink is a source and is actually ‘prepared’ for you, they can turn to that. But the tax is for food and drinks when purchased,” they wrote.

“Nowhere does it say that if you just buy one drink you won’t have to pay the extra 4%. IT says that food and drinks sold must collect the tax.”

Costco membership is now mandatory to purchase classic snacks, angering non-members

Baumbach said the soda dispenser is a vending machine and would be exempt from the tax.

Snack foods such as pre-packaged donuts, gum and sweets are exempt from the tax.

The two buyers were unable to reach an agreement on the law.

Costco shoppers were also disturbed when they found new, smaller hot dog buns in the food court.

“Today I bought a hot dog at Costco. They served it on these rolls,” one customer wrote in a Reddit post.
