During a recent trip to the nearest Lidl, the former fan claimed that only three of the four self-checkouts were open, leaving them waiting in line to pay for some time.

“What a store joke!” they criticized in an X post while tagging Lidl’s official account.

“Every time I go to the College Park store, the self checkout only has 3 terminals open.”

“So I asked and said they only allow 4 to open, but they can only open 3!” the buyer exclaimed.

The incident left them so frustrated that they threatened to boycott Lidl to competitors such as Aldi.

The shopper praised Aldi for having a smooth checkout process, with many self-checkout lanes available.

“Never a problem at Aldi – easy in, easy out, all self-checkouts always open,” they wrote.

“Buy Aldi, not Lidl!”

Lidl responded quickly to the customer’s complaint, noting that their complaints would be brought to the attention of management at the aforementioned store.

“Thank you for bringing this to our attention,” Lidl responded.

“We understand your frustration and will escalate this to the management team overseeing this location.”

Lidl added that it would “review our current configuration” to potentially change it for the customer’s benefit.

ALDI UNDER FIRE

Despite the shopper’s claims, Aldi has recently had its share of backlash regarding self-checkout operations.

A shopper was notified that a store in Missouri would operate with self-checkout operations only last month and was unhappy with the news.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

They criticized the decision online, saying they “despised” it, as parents are often out with carts full of groceries and in need of help.

Others in the comments called the choice “pathetic.”

Several threatened to boycott the network entirely.

Walmart and Target have experienced similar uproar among customers over self-checkout decisions.

Target received significant criticism after implementing a policy that only allows customers with 10 items or fewer to use self-order kiosks.

Walmart also introduced a policy this spring that blocked self-checkout kiosks for Walmart+ and Spark Drivers members as regular customers raged.
