AN iconic second-hand store is closing its doors after years of serving the community.
The Salvation Army thrift store in Binghamton, New York, is having a final sale before closing.

Employees at the Griswold Street store said it can no longer support itself financially, according to the local Fox affiliate. WICZ.
“This is a heartbreaking decision for us at the Salvation Army to close a thrift store that has been such an important part of the community for a long time,” said Major Patricia Kurtz, administrator of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Binghamton.
“However, financially, we can no longer sustain the efforts at this location. The Binghamton community has blessed us by embracing us for so long, and we thank them for their support over the years.”
While the store is closed, Salvation Army services will continue to be available to those in need.

Individuals seeking assistance can go to the Salvation Army office in downtown Binghamton.
FINAL SALE
Clearance sales with up to 25% off are being offered until the store closes for good on July 15th.
Despite the reduced prices, shoppers are saddened by the store’s closure.
“Sad. Last week I bought a Ralph Lauren sports jacket for $2.99,” one shopper commented on a Facebook post.
“All good things come to an end,” said another.
However, one customer said the store “charges more for less every year” and that closure was inevitable.
After closure, local residents can shop at Salvation Army thrift stores in Endicott, Oneonta, Ithaca or Horseheads.
The organization will continue collecting donations at the distribution center on Griswold Street.
BAD DEAL
Another Salvation Army store closed in March in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
Corps officer Lt. Lindsey Galabeas said there was long deliberation about closing the store, but the group found it could better serve residents without the location.
“While the decision to close the store was not made lightly, we believe it is a responsible step to improve our ability to serve the community more effectively,” Galabeas said in an interview with Christian County Now.

Similar to the Binghamton store, this location faced financial difficulties, overcoming operational and sales challenges.
“We plan to repurpose the store space to better meet the growing needs of our community,” the lieutenant continued.
“Plans include establishing a clothing closet where our neighbors in need can access gently used clothing items.”
The retail sector has been hit hard this year, with hundreds of stores closing.
Walgreens recently announced that it would close up to 25% of all of its locations and revealed that the first 26 stores would close.
And a beloved furniture store has announced that it is in its “final phase” after 24 years in business.
