COSTCO has been cracking down on member sharing by adding card scanners to some warehouse entrances.
After seeing an increase in member sharing of self-checkout, Costco announced the new measures.
Previously, customers only needed to show their membership card to an employee to enter the store.
Shoppers at select stores now need to swipe their cards as an employee ensures the photo on the card matches the person.
“New Costco. New Process,” he wrote buyer Tom Nipper in a Facebook post.
He shared a photo of an employee posing with the scanner at a Riverbank, California, store that opened on June 13.
“New membership scanners at the entrance! It’s a very quick process,” she added.
“The member’s photo and information appears on the screen for the attendant to see. No more sharing subscriptions!”
Most people agreed with the measure and believe it is reaching all stores.
“Well, sharing is like cheating,” one person commented.
“Good idea unless you’re using the app,” wrote another person who wasn’t sure how they could scan the app.
Other customers said the new protocol was terrible.
“Poor Costco. How are they going to survive if, God forbid, I let the single mom at work use my card to buy something?” commented one member.
Nipper told them they could buy anyone a Costco gift card and shop without being a member.
“It’s a great gift for non-members,” he wrote.
CARD ERROR
The extra scrutiny on membership cards has led some longtime customers to cancel their subscriptions.
A customer’s wife was shopping with the family card. Each Costco membership comes with two household cards so people can shop at different times.
Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines
Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.
- Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
- Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
- Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
- Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

“My wife and I are members, but the card has my name on it. She called the whole cart and asked, ‘Is your husband with you? he wrote in a Facebook post.
“Uhhh, she’s on the bill too. I’ve never had any problems before.”
The questioning was enough to pressure him to completely abandon the purchase.
“Well, put everything away yourself; we’re done here,” he said, referring to the groceries his wife wasn’t allowed to buy.
Another customer similarly left behind a sum of $400 due to a new policy.
And an iconic Costco bakery item may soon be reduced.
