A COSTCO buyer has backed out of the bulk retailer after it failed to honor one of its new promotions.

After being denied her promised gift card, the shopper vowed to boycott the store and shop at rival BJ’s.

Costco often offers discounts on membership costs to encourage shoppers to become warehouse club members.

The retailer is currently hosting a promotion where customers can receive a Costco digital store card.

The card is essentially a digital gift card sent to customers via email and can be redeemed on your phone or by bringing a printed copy of the card into the store.

Those who sign up for an Executive Membership can receive a $40 Costco Shop Card, while customers who sign up for a Gold Star Membership will receive a $20 Card.

Costco fan Denise Asfar was eager to receive her $20 Shop Card when she was denied by the retailer.

She explained the situation with an X publishsharing how she signed up for Costco just two weeks before her previous membership expired.

However, Asfar was unable to receive the $20 gift card due to an opt-in rule.

Customers must join as new members and sign up for automatic renewal to obtain the bank card.

To qualify as a new member, buyers must have never been a member or have a membership that expired more than 18 months ago.

Asfar was fed up with the bulk retailer’s rules and decided to take her business to a rival store.

Costco shoppers need to request a one-time payment of $55.90 by the August 9 deadline — but you don’t even need a receipt

“According to Costco, I was not eligible for a $20 card. Seriously??! I canceled my Costco membership. Hello BJ’s Wholesale,” she wrote.

POLICY REPOSITION

Costco’s strict rules have also caused other customers to abandon the retailer.

Buyer Alif Artimer canceled his subscription due to a new card membership policy.

On a Facebook publishArtimer explained how he was doing self-checkout when a Costco employee approached him and asked to see the back of his membership card.

“‘Why? I have to scan it to pay and I had to show it to get in and I have to show the receipt and wait in line just to leave with my purchases,'” the shopper responded.

He was told he had to present his card to check if the photo on the back of the card matched his face.

Artimer was fed up with the retailer’s policies and decided to cancel his subscription right then and there.

Costco Membership Levels

Costco customers can choose from three membership cards.

Gold Star Membership:

  • $60 annual fee
  • Includes a free domestic card
  • Valid at all Costco stores worldwide

Executive Member:

  • $120 annual fee
  • Includes a free domestic card
  • Valid at all Costco stores worldwide
  • 2% Annual Reward on Qualifying Costco Purchases

Business Association:

  • $60 annual fee
  • Includes a free domestic card
  • Add affiliate cardholders for $60 each
  • Valid at all Costco stores worldwide
  • Purchase for resale

He left his shopping cart behind and went to customer service to get his membership fees refunded.

“‘I have to wait in long lines just to get out and show my receipts, I have to show my card at the entrance and I have to show it when I buy something and now they ask me to show my photo on the card just to get in line'”, he explained to the Costco employee when asked why he wanted to cancel.

“’Your company creates these situations, these human traffic jams just to motivate people to make impulse purchases. They say time is money and my time is all I have and I’m tired of you wasting it, I just want my money back and will shop elsewhere.

“‘All those free samples, yes, traffic jams and impulse triggers. Everything oversized, mindless consumption and forced excess. Constantly relocating items, again, is just a tactic to increase your purchasing/impulse buying time,'” he concluded Artimer to the worker.

In related news, a shopper was left frustrated after being repeatedly “shocked” by Costco carts – others offered a solution.

Additionally, Costco shoppers were disappointed by a little-known membership rule that charges “full price for 10 months only.”
