That could make shopping for Thanksgiving dinner particularly difficult for customers in New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Customers in New Jersey will be the ones closing the most, as ten stores will close.

“Howell and Jackson are included, how sad. The city will have nothing left”, he wrote Michael Franzone in a Facebook post.

Howell Township is about an hour east of Philadelphia.

Local residents said they preferred Stop & Shop to ShopRite because the latter is “always chaos.”

“I expected Howell to stay open. ShopRite will raise prices once again,” commented one shopper.

Customers at the nearby Carlstadt store were equally devastated by the closure.

“It’s very sad for the Carlstadt community! It’s a great store that serves so many people!” commented Rose Plosia in a Facebook post.

“A large pharmacy is also lost.”

Another buyer also praised the pharmacy.

Changes in retail: closure of large lots and more chains

“Carlstadt Pharmacy is excellent. Pharmacist Jack and his staff have always been very friendly and pleasant and have gone above and beyond,” replied Jade Garland.

“They will be greatly missed.”

After the closures, Stop & Shop will have 359 stores.

WHY ARE STORES CLOSING?

Company president Gordon Reis said the closures would create a healthy foundation for the brand’s future growth.

“Stop & Shop evaluated its global store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy foundation for our brand’s future growth,” he said in a press release.

Employees will be offered vacancies within the company.
