A COSTCO member was successfully reimbursed for his old, partially destroyed room.
The buyer returned the item to the warehouse retailer earlier this month after being unhappy with its performance.
They claimed that the mattress on the California king bed, purchased two years earlier, was causing back problems.
“After 2 years… back pain blames someone” he wrote Costco member Le’apai Ryan T Anoa’i said in a Facebook post in July.
Le’apai said he initially received some resistance from an employee at his local store when he tried to return the mattress cover.
The employee allegedly couldn’t find the member’s purchase at first and then pointed to its “faded” coloring and “damaged” condition before telling Le’apai that his “manager may not approve.”
Photos included in the buyer’s post showed the blue top hat in a cart at Costco with visible rips, tears and stains.
After some back and forth, Le’apai confirmed that he received a full refund of $205.90 for the California King mattress cover and included an image of the receipt showing the transaction.
Le’apai credited his “relentless poker face” with recovering the money for the item.
COME ONE, COME ALL
While it’s certainly possible that the member’s persistence in demanding the money back helped him get the mattress back, Costco’s generous return policy is to blame.
The warehouse retailer guarantees 100% customer satisfaction on most items or your money back.
“We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund,” the policy says read.
This means the California King mattress topper should qualify, no questions asked.
Only a select group of merchandise have return stipulations.
For example, technology items such as cameras, camcorders, cell phones, computers, MP3 players, projectors, televisions and tablets have a 90-day limit from the time of purchase.
Diamonds, cigarettes, alcohol, airlines and items related to live performance events also have additional rules.
Costco Return Policy
What are the details of the famous return policy?
“We guarantee your satisfaction with every product we sell and will refund the purchase price,” said the return policy States.
There are some exceptions to this 100% satisfaction guarantee, which are:
- Electronics – Returns will be accepted within 90 days from the date the member received the product.
- Diamonds – 1.00 ct or larger must be returned with all original documentation within 48 hours and will be inspected for authenticity.
- Cigarettes and alcoholic beverages – These items cannot be returned by law.
- Items with a limited shelf life, such as batteries and tires, cannot be returned.
- Special order kiosk and custom installed programs may only be returned or refunded if under warranty repair/replacement.
- Gold bars, silver bars and coins are non-refundable.
- Store Cards are non-refundable.
- Airline and live performance event items are non-refundable.
Costco memberships can be canceled and refunded at any time if the customer is dissatisfied.
TAKE IT BACK
Many Costco members have seen surprising returns thanks to the policy in recent months.
Similar to Le’apai, another buyer successfully recovered two 10-year-old mattresses with pee stains and had their money refunded.
Others brought back more than $200 worth of half-eaten meats.
One shopper said he saw someone at his local Costco even return Valentine’s Day flowers after they wilted.
Someone even demanded a refund for a 69-cent drink they bought at the food court because it “wasn’t the right temperature.”
Still, Costco monitors returns and you could get caught for abusing the policy.
One member was banned for six months after returning too many TVs until he found the one he liked best.
