A CUSTOMER has criticized Walmart for a new policy change.

They claimed the adjustment drastically impacted trips to the supermarket, causing long queues and waiting times.

The policy, a 15-item limit placed on self-order kiosks, has not yet been implemented nationwide but is currently being tested in select stores.

Mandy, a frequent Walmart shopper, went to the local store earlier this month where the policy was being tested.

She cited a negative experience, arguing that it causes more harm than good to customers with more than 15 items due to a lack of boxes.

“Dundalk Walmart sucks bro,” wrote one shopper, Mandy, in one publish to X earlier this month.

“I have 23 items, so I can’t use self-checkout.”

Mandy said she tried to go to a checkout lane, but with only a few open, she had to wait behind other shoppers with carts full of merchandise.

“So for them, it will be quick to wait in line behind 8 people who have 70 items in their carts,” she continued.

“That makes a lot of sense.”

“Why not self-checkout maybe 35 items or less?” Mandy asked.

Walmart quickly responded to the shopper’s complaint, requesting more information via private message.

‘What sense does that make,’ ask Walmart shoppers as store rolls out self-checkout limit – but only has two open tills

It’s unclear if Mandy ever reached out.

NOT ALONE

She wouldn’t be the first to note complaints about testing the 15-item limit policy.

Earlier this summer, another customer criticized the policy after only self-checkout lanes were left open at his store.

With the policy in place and no open checkouts, there was no place for anyone with more than 15 items to check out.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers also identified their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.

Others were furious about the “ridiculous” long queues due to the change.

OFF TARGET

Walmart’s item limit test comes shortly after Target permanently implemented Express Self-Checkout in its stores, which requires 10 items.

Someone claimed they were “reprimanded” by a Target employee for having 13 products and using the kiosk while traveling.

Another Target shopper said they waited at least 20 minutes longer because of the policy.

One customer also said the policy caused “no sense of urgency” at his Target store.

Some said they saw workers “counting items in carts” before checking out at their Target.
