The grants will total $25,000 or $50,000 each.

Native American residents of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota are eligible to apply.

Registration will close on April 24th at 5pm Central Time.

You must also be registered with the group by April 17th to receive login information.

Final selections will be made in July and scholarship awards are expected to begin on August 15th.

Last year, the program paid out a total of $7.9 million.

It is currently unclear what this year’s total will be.

WHO QUALIFIES?

Native Americans over the age of 18 can register.

The fund is exclusive to residents of Minnesota and the Dakotas.

However, Native Americans whose roots trace back to any indigenous group in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico qualify.

There are also guidelines for how the money can be used.

“This work is centered on a redefinition of wealth from our indigenous perspective,” says the group’s website.

“Indigenous wealth is a quality of life and a mindset that involves the well-being of family and community and the care of relationships, as well as a spirit of generosity,” he added.

Applications are considered based in part on a wealth-building plan and a resource plan that will describe how applicants plan to use the money.

The plans must be aligned with the group’s definition of “indigenous wealth,” he said.

MORE PAYMENTS

Nonprofits and governments across the country have turned to cash payments as a solution to alleviate poverty.

How does Guaranteed Income work?

The Guaranteed Income and Universal Basic Income programs have gained popularity recently.

After the Biden administration’s 2021 American Rescue Plan sent stimulus money to local governments, dozens began testing guaranteed income (GI) systems.

The specifics vary, but GI typically involves payments to people with low incomes. Unlike traditional welfare, there are no work requirements, drug tests, or other restrictions.

Some have advocated for a Universal Basic Income (UBI), which would go to everyone regardless of how much money they earn at work. Alaska has used a similar system since the 1970s.

Proponents say this alleviates poverty while encouraging work, unlike classic welfare, which cuts benefits to people who start earning “too much” money to qualify.

Opponents argue that such a system is too expensive to operate on a large scale.

In California, the state has created a variety of regionally targeted guaranteed income programs.

One of them operates in the Inland Empire region, with the aim of helping pregnant women or former foster youth.

A private group in Fresno started its own guaranteed income program after the state left the area out of its GI funding scheme.

This group will pay 150 people $500 per month.

More than $1,000 of income goes to all residents of a state.

Tacoma, Washington, has another GI program set up.
