A MAN was reduced to tears by the surprising review of his grandmother’s ring.
She purchased the piece in the 1960s after deciding that her original wedding stone was too small.

On an episode of Antiques Roadshow, a man brought his grandmother’s ring in for an appraisal.
As he explained, it wasn’t her original wedding ring, but rather an update she got later in life.
“My grandfather didn’t have much money and it was right in the heart of the Great Depressionand he gave her a very, very small diamond in a big ring.
“She always swore she would get a bigger diamond,” he said.
Decades later, she spent about $2,000 in New York City to get the biggest diamond she could afford.
She passed the ring on to her grandson in the late 1990s, and he hasn’t kept anything since, but kept it for sentimental reasons.
“It’s only been used twice in the last 25 years,” he said.
Appraiser Mark Schaffer of A There Vielle Russia Inc.. in New York he was very impressed with what he saw.
He determined that the diamond was about 3.5 carats and the setting was made of good quality platinum.
Schaffer classified the stone as SI1 or SI2, meaning there were only minor inclusions or imperfections.
On the sides of the ring, he noticed emerald-cut diamonds, adding a “sense of importance” to the ring.
As for the overall value of the piece, Schaffer had some good News for your guest.

‘I HAD NO IDEA’
“We estimate the overall retail value to be at least US$40,000,” said the expert.
The owner immediately started crying.
“Oh my God, I had no idea. I had no idea,” he said.
